My Passat has had a soft tyre problem for months, yea bad thing I know!
It would go down to approx. 15psi but take about 2/3 weeks to do this.
last week Thursday I think it was down again so pumped it up.
Then yesterday I was out in the car and noticed it was almost flat again.
I had pulled into the local garage but somebody was using the air.
But in the same forecourt area is a Kwik-Fit so against my judgement I thought I had better get it checked out!
So I watched as the guy checked the tyre on the car (hoisted of the ground)
Then he took the wheel off and sprayed it with a solution all round the tread still nothing
Then he lays the wheel down and sprays around the rim, both sides.
Comes into me in reception and says its leaking from around the rim!
never heard of this before but hey he says he will take the tyre off and clean the surfaces and put it back on with a good bit od sealer which he did and I watched and yea seems to have done the trick!
Kind of amazed that's all

kind of amazed you have never heard of this before its really quite common

I get leaking from around the rim, I just courtesy wipe

Normally its corrosion on the wheel under where the bead fits, cleaning does sort it, but if the surface is now porous, then expect the tyre to deflate again, it may take a bit longer though!
Not as much of late, but in the recent past, I've known of wheels having to be scrapped, as nothing seems to solve the problem permanently! But yes, a very common everyday problem
Hope yours is OK

Surely paint or a sealant on the surface would stop it?

Ford "Pepperpots" iirc, and a few others, I think the wheels made by GKN, and were as porous as a sponge!
They would corrode around the bead seating area. Out of everything we tried, blasting and powdercoat seemed to work best... for a few months! until the bead of the tyre wore its way through the powdercoat, and it was back to square one! wheels these days seem to be far better quality, and rarely do you now see flaking lacquer like you used to 10 years ago
Probably they had to up the game because of warranty claims!

Thanks Thom
No I have never heard of this before!
have heard about split rims leaking but that is between the parts of the wheel and why I shied away from buying some!

I think this has happened on pretty much every car I have owned.

Just goes to show you are never too old to learn something new

it's pretty common. When i worked at kwik fit it was a daily occurance. Some steel rims we would go round them with a blow torch and wire brush then use bead sealer. Seen some corroded right through. Alloys to suffer with road salt getting in under the paint, all four wheels on my corrado are deflating as i type due to it. Sometimes a rim leak wont show itself when the wheels off as some will only leak when loaded on a certain area.

Bead sealant sorts this problem out, unfortunately not all garages are using it. Most of the mainstream garages I've used, suchs as ATS do a horrific job of tyre fitting and don't use bead sealant, so my tyres go flat quickly. I've since found a local small garage who use bead sealant. Although they're not the cheapest to buy tyres from, they fit them properly and you'll not need to go back to get a leak sorted.

Very true!
Just never happened to me before so never heard of it!

Check the valve as that might be leaking...happened on my tyre...
For the money they take when changing a tyre they should put a new valve in and coat the rim...some just don't do it as they are quite cheap....but a good tyre place will do that.
Good luck...as a new valve will be a lot more cheaper than a new rim...

have changed wheels and tyres now!
Got my old RS8 reps back via Billy!
