Got a night blue on order (think it looks very classy - there is a shadow blue Mk6 GTI lives nearby which always looks smart) but still not 100% sure.
There are few night blues around - the only ones I have seem look very "flat" with no real shine to the colour. Is it just because they are needing a good wash? Does the colour really shine more after a quick wash?
Photos like AP69s look fantastic, but lots of other photos look flat. Does the night blue only really work if you are prepared to put lots of time into the detailing (which, if I'm being honest, I won't)?
Considering swapping to tornado red. Any thoughts from owners?
-
Colour is the hardest decision when buying a car I find and very subjective. After 10 posts on this thread you will be more confused than when your started . Follow your gut it knows the answer :-)
PS if your not a car washer go grey or silver...
-
Have you seen a NB gti/gtd in the flesh?
we'd originally ordered NB having never seen one but then saw a NB GTI next to a carbon grey one and immediately changed to the grey. Without wishing to offend NB/black owners I don't think a dark colour does the car justice especially 5dr. if I'm brutally honest only lighter colours do but I don't want a white, silver or limestone grey car. This is my opinion.
My advice is to find a NB car with the wheels you are going for as even these make big difference in the way it looks.....It looks better with santiagos
-
I have the night blue on standard wheel's. It looks great if it's clean and polished, otherwise it looks crap! I don't get the time to clean mine often either and would not chose it again because of that.
-
I have a Night Blue 5 door with Santiagos and think it's a great colour, the sparkle is superb.
I wanted something that wasn't the predictable grey/white/black/red. Night blue wasn't a standout colour for me, it was the best of a poor bunch. Since it's turned up i'm very happy with it.
End of the day, nobody can tell you what you like - you need to do your own research.
-
The demo car they had at the dealers when I went to look at the Mk7 initially was night blue so that's what I ordered. It was a sunny day and it looked stunning.
My mk5 which this car replaced was Tornado red and it was time for a change so red didn't even factor into my decision process.
I ended up with Carbon Grey after doing more research on the internet and I have to say I'm glad I did. I think Carbon Grey or White are the best choices for this generation GTI.
However out of blue or red, I think I would say blue. Mostly because its metallic and looks better in the sunshine.
-
Regarding blue as a colour I had a mk5 GTI in blue graphite and no matter how much I polished and washed it in most lights it looked flat and dull. That colour is no longer available. My mk6 GTi was tornado red and my new Mk7 is pure white and both of those look great in any lights. Just my opinion of course
-
Night blue lover here, so prepare for my bias.. :)
I love the dynamics of this colour, yes it can look 'dull' - but I actually like that look as contrast to the sparkling shine the sun brings out.
It looks quite matt, and closer to a black in dull light, but then when the sun pops out - wow, it is beautiful.
I also think Red look superb on the MK7, so I think it has to come down to what you see yourself living with for x years - at least that's what made me eventually chose NB, I thought it would be a colour that provides more contrast and interest for me.
As for cleaning/detailing, I'm not into my detailing, but it was easy to apply some easy to use products to keep it looking good. So even if you don't want to spend a lot of time, a spray on/wipe off sealent/quick detailer (such as Sonax Brilliant Shine) would keep the car looking amazing.
Here is the car when I picked it up, the dealer had power washed with water only, there is nothing on the paint:

Most subjective topic on here so it really is each to their own
How long your preferred colour looks good between having to put some effort in to bring back to showroom shine is a factor though.
My Pure White has no different driving conditions and cleaning than my previous 2 x Black cars of Metallic and Plain and the white is proving far more effective in retaining its looks for longer.
It is not that it is any less dirty, it just masks it a whole lot better and its only when you wash off the first section you realise how filthy it actually is.
Both the blacks, a colour I love when gleaming, pretty much immendiately used to highlight the dirt and was a nightmare for bird mess in attracting and being readily seen.
So for me white has been another choice got right as it accentuates the lines so well and looks great when shining and holds onto that for much longer.
You do pay a price though and once a year it will need a session of tar removal but products are so good they literally just dissolve and wipe off.
Think with all colours you protect well as just cleans so much easier. Collonite is my choice.
With regards other colours.
CSG would be my #2 choice as just have always really liked the GTI greys through and looks amazing in sunlight but from owners on here you have to be prepared to keep it clean and like most metallics you do lose that wow factor on cloudy days.
The Midnight Blue is a colour that actually like also but only on the GTD as think the silver trims suit it better than the red.
Tornado Red is my least favourite colour as think you lose some of the contrast and effect of red stripe and is a colour that if not polished and pinging can look really flat.
Think the GTI and GTD both look great in black but even though my favourite colour overall when shining bright I would never ever have a black car again.
Likely keeping this GTD for many years and replacing the now 2nd car with it and as not want 2 white cars imagine that a CSG GTI will be my next choice.
None of this helps you at all, all you get is owners highly subjective thought processes where no one is actually right or wrong
-
This is my favourite colour. They all look flat if you let them.

Thanks for the pics and comments. Still slightly undecided. The only night blues I have seen have been briefly, and have looked flat, but some of the photos on here look great.
Lots of love on here for the CSG. That was the other choice which we seriously considered - I think it works well with the red stripe. My wife thought it looked a bit dull though.
Realistically, the car will get a quick wash reasonably often, but not polished all that often. I do wonder whether that will be enough to keep the night blue looking good, or whether the red will look better with less effort.
Annoyingly, red was a no brainer for me on the Mk6, but I don't love it quite so much on the Mk7 - something about that stripe on the Mk7 doesn't work quite so well on the Mk7 for me! Argh!
I guess that at the end of the day, I'll be happy with either given how hard I am finding it to choose! It's a shame that VW have such a small range of colours for the GTI.

If your not really into detailing and you want the car to remain looking in reasonable condition then you should really be considering lighter colours as they mask any marks and swirls far better than the darker shades

I've learnt that from owning a black Scirocco. Cleaned often, but showing the marks now. I'll be spending a bit of time over the summer holiday polishing it up. I'm hoping that the night blue might be slightly better. I'm also going to be better behaved - I now wash with two buckets and getting a mitt instead of a sponge which will hopefully help a bit.
-
Night Blue owner here and very happy with my choice. However it needs to be kept clean to look its very best, but surely that applies to most colours ? Mine gets a wash every couple of weeks (no detailing as such, just a bucket of warm water with car shampoo and a pressure washer for the wheels etc) and it comes up as new every time !
-
I went from Diamond Black Pearl on my MK5 to Tornado Red on my MK7. I'm not a dedicated detailer, I just don't have the time or inclination to do it religiously. When I do it I do it right, and DBP is an incredibly satisfying colour to work with, much more so than Tornado Red. However, and it's a big however, it looks good for much much longer. In my experience my car still looks pretty good 3 - 4 weeks after a wash, compared to 2 days with DBP!
-
Mk7 GTD's look good in red but for some reason GTI's less so.
The first MK7 GTI I ever saw was in red and I didn't like it but I often see red GTD's and know that if I'd had bought one I'd have picked red in an instant. So it must be something to do with the red stripe and the wheels on the GTI.
I had an Imperial Blue Leon Cupra about a million years ago and that put me off dark blue forever. Every tiny spec of dust that settled onto that car seemed to mark it. Never again!
And so, for me, there were two choices for the MK7 GTI - white or Carbon. I chose white as that's what VW use in their press shots so it must suit the car well - that's all I had to go on as there were practically no MK7 GTI's in the UK around when I ordered mine.
But in retrospect I'd have done for a Tungsten Silver 5 door instead of a white 3 door.
Que sera sera.

IMO - The GTD's look brilliant in night blue, and the GTI looks brilliant in red. (I know I'm biased but I chose red because it's my favourite!)
The silver highlights of the GTD really compliment the Night Blue, and the red highlights on the GTI really compliment the Tornado Red IMO.
Here are a couple of pics of my TR GTI... Mega bright out in the sun...

I have however detailed it within an inch of it's life and will maintain it. It doesn't look great dirty but no colour really does.
If you want something that will hide the dirt slightly, look to CSG, Reflex Silver or Tungsten... All great colours.
-
Definitely very subjective.
I had a dilemma between CSG and White.
CSG for me is awesome when clean as it is one of those colours that really pops.
It took me from Christmas when I decided I was ordering the GTD to February before finally settling on White but even then I kept changing my mind.
It was pictures on here that someone posted of CSG and the colour was totally lifeless. I know pictures don't do cars justice but it was enough for me to make my mind up.
Ironically when I picked my GTD up I asked the dealer not to prepare it so it was rather dirty looking and there in the showroom polished to an inch of its life was a GTI in Carbon looking stunning
So like others have said, if you are prepared to put the work in to make it pop then go for it.

Red is nice but I just think the red stripe is totally lost on it. And now they have red GTI badges that for me against a red car will just look like something from Halfords. It looks great on any other car but just not red for me.

remember seeing Milltek's Night Blue GTI last year and loved the colour compared to shadow blue

The miltek gti was the reason I went night blue. I have ordered some red badges for mine today and had it cleaned. Must say it looks amazing in this weather. Also a dark car look mean at night!
-
Cheeky opportunist shot, but I have much love for mine.

The bits that make this particular car stand out is the white lettering contrast.
Think NB looks great on a GTD with silver accents and still good but less so on the GTI with the Red as the contrast.
Its a great colour in the sun but does look quite modest on a cloudy day as does the CSG.
-
I'll be getting the red badges fitted to mine tomorrow. I'll upload a pic once I get it back so you can see what the red contrast is like against the NB
-
Great, thanks remlapeel.
Although our car will be standard spec, not PP, so I'd be a bit of a fraud with the red badges. ;)
-
At this rate my car will be quite unique with the silver badges
-
Okay I lied I can't post a pic of the red badges.... turned up at the dealer to have them fix my spoiler, fit the badges and fix my turbo. Left my car there at 8:30am and returned at 5:00pm to be told the badges didn't come in, they couldn't fix the spoiler so they need to order a new one and they don't know what's up with the turbo and are waiting for VW to get back to them. Great work Robinson VW!
Badges should be in next week. No idea about the other two issues.
-
A little update... Colour changed to red not long before getting the build week confirmed. No going back now! I do like the night blue, but having spent this evening polishing swirl marks out of my black scirocco and noticing the stone chips, I'm hoping the red will be a bit easier to live with. :)
-
You won't be sorry. There're not many bright red cars about at the moment. A Tornado Red GTI Mk7 is a real head turner. Mind you it's difficult to hide!
-
Saw a NB GTD on the M6 earlier this week in the sunshine and have to agree it looked gorgeous sparkling away, lovely colour

You'll be fine with red

Red does stand out a mile. I go past one a few times a week and can always see it coming! I like it. I went for night blue for the more menacing look at dusk/night. Either way you won't be disappointed.
-
Thanks all. Looking forward to getting it now.
Glad to see you finally got the badges sorted remlapeel
