Title: differential issue

hi
recently posted about clickin while driving.
all usual suspects checked and fine. ball joints cv joints shocks struts etc.
someone mentioned a diff issue. after some research it does sound similar to noises i am getting.
how easy is it to check if it is a diff issue and is it expensive to repair. my mechanical abilities are not great

Alot easier and far cheaper to replace the gearbox.

Yep, gearbox out anyway to get to the diff properly.
Make sure diff has been refurbished with bolt kit on any box you buy if you want it to last.
High miles loosens up the rivets which ends in a big bang. ....
If your not bothered then plenty of second hand boxes about with 30 days ticket for a oner.

i would rather get it done properly dont think i would trust a second hand one. is the noises i am experiencing (if its gearbox) dangerous to drive. i have had a look at gearboxes and price around £700 is that right and how much labour roughly would i be looking at paying?
probably more than car is worth am i right? i dont realy wanna get rid due to one off colour just looking at all my options

For £700 id have a spare car for parts or atleast a 2nd LSD box  :whistle:

If it is the diff, (and I have my doubts) then when it goes you will experience a big bang some grinding and clanking then loss of drive.
Not dangerous in itself, but if your pulling onto a motorway or similar it could be very hairy.
Just drive it and save up for a second hand box from the scrappy, £700 sounds a lot but if it is genuine recon box with 12 months ticket, new clutch kit, slave etc etc it soon adds up for a Joe public buyer.

I would get the CV's done, you cant check them without taking them off and worse case if its the diff then you know the cv's are all good :wink:

You don't want a diff to lock itself up...you will end up in a sticky situation.

Does it click more if you go one way over the other way?
