Title: EuroJet intercooler problems. Update 28/08
Post by: SI74 on 25 June 2014, 22:00
Has anyone on here fitted one of these? Made a start on fitting the one I have today, knew it can be a pain to fit the new crash bar but I didn't think they where this bad. Not bolt on kit.  Sorry for the crap pictures.

One bolt fitted but look at the bottom one

Same bolt on the other side fitted

Way out on the other two on the right side.

Here's how much it's off

Any ideas? Was going to slot some of the holes but looking like a better idea to make a new one.

For such a big company you think they would have a handle on this.  Rest of the kit looks fine but this bar is a joke. One of the reasons to make a new one is cuz of the welds.

Are the hole centres correct on the plate if you hold it up against the car unbolted because if they are you could always slice the welds and tweak it to suit and reweld it. Failing that you could open up all the holes slightly and move the bar around until you get it leveled.

The right hand plate is way of the level. So going to cut it of and re-weld it on as I just bought a new welder so might as well put it to good use instead of making a full new bar.

I was also a bit let down when it came to the crash bar, the rest if the kit is great quality and works very well.

Yea the rest is unreal can't fult it in any way just that bar is a joke.

so out of curiosity how much was this kit

Post by: mcgee9t2 on 30 June 2014, 12:57
this was the main thing that put me off the kit, look at the original crash bar, then look at the eurojet crash bar, the eurojet looks like somehting i could knock togeather in half a hour in the garage...

looking at it, I am glad I went the wellycooler route

Was the crash bar that come with the wellycooler a good fit? Can always use that on the eurojet kit I guess

no crash bar with a wellycooler.... just cut the standard one down a bit!!!

Think it was £349 plus £12 posting. Same ones go for $700 in the US, wanted it cuz the pipe work is at the top and it wasn't that bad a price really.

10 mins max to make that bar and they couldn't get it right. Going to email just to see what they say.

Guess if it comes to it we always have the option of cutting the standard crash bar but it would be easier still to just cut and weld the eurojet bar.

The standard one is quite hefty compared to that euro jet one (my bathroom towel handrail looks stronger)
that being said if it does the job..
Title: Re: EuroJet intercooler problems.
Post by: SI74 on 30 June 2014, 18:26
In truth the euro jet one is twice as heavy if not more. Don't let it fool you.
Title: Re: EuroJet intercooler problems.
Post by: rockmonkey69 on 30 June 2014, 23:27
I can definitely vouch for that  the crash bar weighs as much as the rest of the intercooler kit, definitely strong.

Heavy doesn't necessarily represent strength if it's fabricated from cheap sub standard mild steel though...then theres the questionably poor welding heads?

There's always the option of cutting the standard crash bar if that's stronger, it's easier to cut the standard one than the eurojet too so it would save you having to do some hard grafting
Title: Re: EuroJet intercooler problems.

I've been looking into doing that as the bar from Eurojet need to be spaced at the bottom due to the shape of the car.  Think I might be able to cut away part of the standard one and brace it then I know it will fit 100% at both ends.

So got this sorted yesterday, ended up cutting the end plate off and re-welding it.

You can kinda see how much it's off and one side is not flat to the ground.

Bar cut off,

Tacked up

And finished

Looking better now and it fits.

Now here's the welds on the other side from the factory, do I cut it off too and weld it back on as well?

the main issue was it fitting, now that's done I would leave it, that being said you want to be confident it will hold up in a crash so I wouldn't put a limit on safety so its down to you.

Was the original issue that the plates were bent slightly? it was probably put in a vice of somekind for the welds so one side may have been over tightened by the 5 year old

I know in one hand I want it on the other I want it to be safe lol. Still waiting on the hood support to come from the US so have till it comes to make up my mind.

To be fair that bar isnt really going to do much in a collision anyway.

Yea that's ford sure but don't want the welds to crack after it's all fitted up. A light bit of grinding and two slaps with a hammer had the other plate off.

You've answered your own question mate - re weld it is
