I HAVE A GTI MK2 AND I RACED A FOCUS TDCI THE OTHER NIGHT AND HE WAS PULLIN AWAY FROM ME.....ARE ALL 8 VALVE GOLFS SLOW OR ARE TURBO DIESEL FOCUS GOT MORE POWER?
I KNOW THE 8 VALVER HAS 120BHP, CAN I GET MORE GRUNT BY ADDING A CHIP? OR IS THE HOLES IN THE AIRBOX THE WAY FORWARD TO INSTANT POWER?
-
no -the secret is a Rolls Royce Olympus engine swap.
You can get one cheap - coz BA are selling all their Concordes now
-
lol
mk2 8v / 120 bhp / 0-60 - 9.0
ff tdci / 115 bhp / 0-60 - 9.8
there aint too much in it really...
u got a fat g/f? :)
-
on the move the TDI will be faster due to the higer torque
-
i thought the mk2 8v only had 112bhp??
-
/me got that info from this site!
http://www.golfgti.co.uk/viewfeature.asp?featureID=11
-
I don't want to bring up 8v v's 16v but for sheer acceleration you cannot beat the valver ok it might start to run out of steam after 90mph but it gets you there with a much bigger smile on your face than what the 8v would.I can believe you got beat by the focus,It was those same experiences that made me buy my valver back after only 8 months with the 8v!
-
didint realise it was 139bhp for mine!!
Thats a lot for a mk1 cabrio.
No wonder it torque steers like a mutha.
-
too many variables. did you both leave off the same point at the same time? did you just go to overtakle and he pulled away? what are the specifics. GTI's are far from slow but admittadly there are cars on the road today with technology that wasn't around 15 years ago. I had a 220t rover pull away from me in a straight away not long ago but he didn't even come close to touching me in the twisty bits ;D
-
8v's are slow, go and get a 16v :-*
-
;D

prob why they added this ESD stuff to the mk3 16v and VR6.. no torque steer at all.. maybe less fun.. but in a way its not ;)
-
EDL(Electronic Differential Lock) or more commonly known as traction control.
-
Electronic Differential Lock System (ESD)
from http://www.gti16v.org/tspecs96.htm
lol
-
IS A DIGIFANT 8 VALVER ON A MK2 THE OLD MK1 SYSTEM...DOES THAT MEAN IT ONLY HAS 112BHP?
-
Mk1 had 1.6 8v k-jet 110bhp, late mk1 had 1.8 8v k-jet 112 bhp, mk2 had 1.8 8v k-jet till about 1988 112bhp, after 1988 1.8 8v digifant 112 bhp.
-
ah hah!.. ESD is german for EDL ;)
nice description of 'how it works'
http://www.audiworld.com/tech/wheel6.shtml
I like the way I can accelerate even on corners without any effect (well i can feel the effect being taken away). its pretty hard to slide the car compared to my old one, i've managed it once on an uphill double S bend out in the countryside here.
the town centre here is actually retrofitted with slippery cobbles (yes there are accidents!) i saw a nice boxster just after it had been wrapped around a lamppost at about 2am one night after coming out of a club.
shame cant turn it off really..
-
Disconnect the control unit, no EDL or ABS. Do it and its your responsibility! ;)
-
lol.. i mean like bmw style :)
cant complain, tis getting cold and slippery, once i'm confident its ok i'll be able to slip across the cobbles in town and beat the buses etc hehe
-
OH BUGGER....SO THATS WHY MY 8 VALVER IS POO.
HANDLES WELL THOW ON STANDARD SUSPENSION SET UP...BUT STEERING HEAVY BUT IM SURE ILL GET USED TO IT IF I GET DOWN THE GYM A BIT MORE.
-
i just overtook a mitsu FTO, 8valves have better pull in lower revs (or so it seems to me) , or maybe thats because my 8v has had 8 full tanks of BP ultimate. (the stuff really works... honest)
you should have seen the guys face...
:-\
-
agree that the 8V is slow.
I don't think I can hit 60 in under 10s. I think manufacturers official figures are to be taken with a pinch of salt.
besides, there are too many speed cameras where I live and if I have anything faster, I'll end up losing my license.
-
Interestingly i had a straight line race with a MkIII VR6. It was no contest...
I won!!
-
was it being pushed? :D

thats good considering its only 97RON in the UK so basically you are using super unleaded!!
have a read:-
http://www.bp.com/ultimate/uk/default.asp
optimax is 98
-
I'm going to stick up for the 8v's here. I can say that mine is rapid. All its got is an induction kit and a full stainless system. I used to have a 309 GTI and my 8v Golf is definately faster even though the 309 GTI has 130ish Bhp.
-
Its all about power to weight ratio.
If you're a fat b@stard its not going to accelerate quick.
-
"agree that the 8V is slow"
8v's are slower 0-60 because the gearboxes won't let them get to 60 in 2nd.
My old Valve would do the following thru the gears:
1 - 35
2 - 70
3 - 95
4 - 110
5 - 130 (mph)
Intresting to know how comparative 8v's performed - anybody?
-
I'll just nip out and give it a run round the works car park to see if I can come up with some figures
-
lol :D :D :D
what's your record for doughnuts, wheelies and stoppies in one session then? (whilst staring at birds, flicking the vee's at police and swearing at old people?)
-
I can do all of those at once. Some people said it wasnt possible, but I can even burp, fart and sneeze (whilst keeping my eyes open) all at the same time. Im obviously gifted.
-
that's just f**king dangerous man!!!! :o
try it with your eyes open
-
yeah 8v's are slow. but depends on whos driving?
-
IM HAVING TO RE-THINK MY LITTLE BATTLE WITH THE FOCUS NOW, COMMING BACK FROM WORK TODAY RAGGIN THE ARSE OF IT AND ON THE CHANGE TO 4TH THE CLUTCH STARTED TO SLIP...HMMM MAYBE IT WAS SLIPPIN ALL ALONG BUT I HADENT NOTICED COS IT WAS SO SLIGHT....
ANOTHER PROBLEM TO GO WITH ALL THE OTHERS...
NEW CLUTCH PLEASE!!!!!!! :'(
-
hey blame the driver thats all i can say! lol, ive got a 8v mk2 and a 20v mk4 both about the same but the 8vs got more of a bottom end rush and the 20v hangs on to its gears longer cause its got higher revving engine, had to say which would be best, i drive em both hard and will race any thing, its more a case of my bollocks are bigger than yours situation!
-
8v....16v....there just to slow for me lads, get yaselves a cavalier sri,its got the gsi lump in it and is 150bhp,and would kick all ya arses,im gettin rid of it though coz it chugs along to slow......m3 power here i come!!!!!!
-
HEY PRESSURE I LIKE YOUR STYLE BUT SOME OF US DONT WANT BIG BANK LOANS FOR CARS WE CANT REALLY AFFORD....GET BACK ON THE DECKS WHERE YOU BELONG YOU RENEGADE MISSFIT ;D
-
haha thats my bro,ive driven his 8v golf sh!t bucket and i should have driven it into a wall,id rather have the bank debt and a lovely motor to pose round in lets just hope i can handle the power and not write it off be4 ive paid for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Here's a scan of the VW 'Specification and equipment 1990 model year' (issue January 1990) which shows the performance figures for both the 8v and 16v GTi's:
Performance: GTi GTi 16V
-------------------------------------------------------------
Top Speed, mph/Kph 119/191 129/208
Acceleration, secs 0-50 mph 6.5 6.0
Acceleration, secs 0-60 mph 8.3 7.9
(http://www.navalon.org.uk/temp/gti/1990-GTi-Specs.jpg)
-
well on them figures it looks like 0.4 secs between the 8v and the 16v thats about right to me, bob on bring on that 8v rush
-

Why don't you go back to shagging your bro then? :-*
-
vr6 must be pished, hes sticking up for the 8v!
Go on my son
-
Anything is better than a nova even a polo 1.0.
-
would rather walk than drive a nova!
-
hey ya know word will get about and well have an invasion of nova boys are we ready?
-
well i am dont know about you dudes!
-
Get the petrol and matches ready ;)
-
Funniest thread I have read in ages.
I have the old MK2 K-Jet, and I do think it is slow.
I nearly got my arse kicked by one of those Citreon Saxo VTR things.
FFS it only had a 1400 engine in it and I struugled to get rid of it.
I am certainly no fat b@stard either, just an old heavy car.
Still have some fun in it tho.
Regards.
Dean.
-
Dean,
A VTR Saxo is a 1.6 - it only weighs about 40 kilos less than your mk2 - with about the same power as your 1.8.
Don't be gutted - your car probably isn't in the best of tune seeing as it is going to be over 13 years old.
Now go and tune your GTi and spank that frog!!!!
;D ;D :D
-
The Saxo VTR has only got 100bhp. You should've spanked it. Maybe you had the handbrake on.
Saxo VTR
Performance data
Max speed (mph) 120
Capacity (cc) 1587
Power (bhp) 100
0-60 mph 9.0 secs
Kerb Weight (kg) 920
Max Torque 100 lb/ft
@ 3500 rpm
Tank Capacity (litres) 45
-
The saxo will still fall apart in a few years ;)
-
Mate,
the spec you just listed for the Saxo is almost identical to the mk2!!!
consider the fact the Saxo will be newer than a 13 yr old Golf.
spec off the top of my head:
8v
top speed - 120
cc - 1781
power - 115
0-60 - 8.5 sec
weight - 990 kgs
max torque - 120 ft/lb
these would be relevent at point of sale - but the golf would be way off the performance figures if it hadn't been tuned for a while . . . .
Sounds like a fair race if both cars were in std tune and condition . . .
-
If the golf were in a good state of tune, it will go FASTER than the figures quoted! the old k-jet engines are well known for getting better the more they loosen up.
-
My golf is 17 year old now, it could probably do with a good tune as well as a new bonnet and tailgate, and possibly a new rev counter as that is now playing up.
The old git has done 195K, so I expect it to be slow, but as I said I still have plenty of fun in it, and I canot bear to get rid of it.
Still an excellent car, I now want a J reg valver to put my leather interior from this car into.
Regards.
Dean.
-
Just proves how good vws are, they just go on forever! ;D

Best car I have ever had.

I doubt many pug 205s will last that long.
-
doe's anyone remember on topgear or 5th gear when they featured the most dangerous old hot hatches?? the capri got slated as expected but the pug205 sh!te talked up by its french owners about its handling, was said to be a death trap in the wet it just would not turn into a corner and went straight on time after time :o funny how the golf was never mentioned ;D
-
I said the 205 was a death trap but some new members didn't believe me ::)
-
have to agree with the old k-jet theory, mines 18yrs old and goes like stink, hard to compare with me 20v mk 4 but the bottom end rush is to die for! sham you cant get em both together! as the top end rush of me 20v goes on to 6800 and still pulling!
-

my valver is 15, owned it for 10-11 years, and its getting the treatment right now. can't wait to see her again soon. been gone for 2 months....

my valver is 14,but no one else appriciates it like i do,i've lost count of the times i've been told by my missus to sell it and grow up. i did swear that i'd sell it a year ago and brought a 98 mondeo ghia (soory just had 1st child and all that!) but isn't it funny how i cauldn't find a buyer in almost a year now ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
and if my love of decent motors stays with me i never f**king will!!!!
-
could that saxo have been a VTS?... they're even faster..
The VTS is a 16v 1600,
125 bhp,
0 - 60 - 7.5 secs. (seen as low as 7 mentioned..)
Tops out at 130 mph
think u guys need this page.. lol
