Title: Mk2 Golf Roof Liner
Post by: richie2480 on 20 June 2014, 20:25
Ok, Hopefully someone can help. My rood liner was recovered by the guy I bought it off. It's been a couple of years now and the material is starting to come away. I've re-glued it but it has come away again. I've taken it to a local trimmer and he explained that the way the roof liners were originally made fitting a new material to a liner will always be a problem due to the way the liner was originally made. He has sprayed some glue on for a temp fix but he has stated it will not hold, especially with the warm weather we currently have.
Questions:
1. Any idea on how to re-fit material?
2. After another roof liner. A good one and I don't mind paying.

Starting to get me down when I see the liner sagging in my rear view mirror

There's a guide to this in the mk2 maintenance & info section, and some threads in the main section. The main thing is to make sure the glue has a good base to stick to, I gave the liner a quick sanding over after removing the material to get rid of some excess glue.

Yeah to be honest, to get the headliner to restick you would need to remove it from the car and, as stated above, sand away the old glue and foam, even then I doubt if it will last, hence why I did mine as per my guide.  Hope you get it sorted

The problem is the backing itself can start to break up as well, at least mine was. Easiest option is to look for one from as late a car as possible, fit it and pray it lasts a while.

Retrimming following the guide worked well for me. Been over a year and it looks perfect still.
