Title: coolant leak.
Post by: gazmondo35 on 13 June 2014, 20:09
My 3 month old gti pp has started to leave a little bit of coolant on the drive directly below the gearnob after its been on a run, not sure if this is a common problem but was surprised that I never had a warning light that my fluid was low.

And what makes you think it's not the aircon? Is the coolant actually going down?

The coolant level  was down past the the lowest line, but no warning light, it does stop leaking after the car has cooled down.

So are there 'two' leaks as the aircon especially now it's hot will drip also, but see if your coolant goes down any further

So is it normal for the air con to leak , don't remember any of my other cars leaking, will kept a eye on the coolant level over the week, now that it has been topped back up.

Within 4 months of buying new, my Mk6 GiT also had coolant leak but I had a warning light.
Turned out to be faulty water pump, which was a known/common issue.
Was replaced under warranty for many of us a 3-4 years back, but would have thought the VW would have got this sorted for the Mk7....

It might be my bad luck, but in 3 months of ownership &2,600miles.
I have a coolant leak.
Screen needs replacing (major stone chip)
Rear hubs have gone rusky.
Dash board rattle
&lots of front end stone chips, but still loving it.

As Graham says, it's most likely condensation from the AC compressor, the coolant in mine was just below the minimum line but i've since topped it up and checked it regularly with no loss, it seems to be quite common that the coolant is on or below the min mark, i think they ship them with minimum fluids just incase but they should be checked at PDI.

Coolant will have a colour and smell. Air con condensate won't. Simples!

..but, as said above, unless you have two puddles, the one you are getting will be air con condensate.
