what the topic says.

i think they have a function for self-calibrating - moving right, up and down ... but on other forums people suggest this should be done by the dealer

Thats just a function test to show they work.
they auto level compared to the car but if the beam pattern is set wrong to start with they will always be wrong.
Depends if you think they are out. In an ideal world everytime a bulb is changed the alighnment should be checked and re-ajusted.

by out i take it you mean not properly aligned?  When i replaced the OEM xenons myself and switched on the car, the xenons moved up/down etc as always and then moved back to their 'aligned' position - there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with how they behave or with whether they beam compared to before.
