Title: How to remove vw golf fuel tank mk3 1997 GL
Post by: mr.wrightside on 11 June 2014, 01:10
Have a leak coming from the top of my tank, I need to take the whole thing out to find it but cannot find any tutorials etc on how to completely remove it. Have looked at input under the seat and the source of the leak is not there. Mainly need to know how to remove from the section where you actually put fuel in (input). Any help is greatly appreciated :).

If you go up in the info/maintenance Section you will find my thread of how to remove the fuel tank.

If its same as Gti you will need a new one as its all joined plastic

You have straps underneath which are fairly obvious!
Have to unscrew the big plastic plug in boot floor to get at the pump and fuel feed connections.
The tricky bit is the filler neck the rubber concertina bit has a spring ring inside it.

But this are maybe packed with mud etc so its hard to get out! Mine was a pig!

Haha I know there's the straps, however the rest of the information you provided was more what I was looking for. And whether I have to disconnect power, take out relays etc?

Theres a screw on the filler neck too, its normally coated in mud so hard to spot.

So I have the tank out (admittedly pretty damn easy), and there are no holes on the outside of the tank and it is very difficult to tell where the leak is coming from. Hope this link works for you. http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/wrightside/library/?sort=3&page=1

No! It locked up my works PC! lol

As I said you cant repair these anyway unless you are an expert in plastic welding!

The link locked up your work PC? And it may be coming from a hose, and quite probably isn't a crack in the actual tank. Can I not repair that? What do you think, given the pictures?
