Title: strange rubbing/grinding noise coming from front wheels.
Post by: Rob.S VW on 10 June 2014, 21:08
hi, i have a strange noise coming form the front of the car around the wheel area, orginally thought it was the brakes grinding from weae, so changed the discs and pads, the noise still continues, my golf is lowered so checked it wasnt rubbing on the ARB, still loads of room between the drive shaft and ARB, ive changed the ARB bushes as they need replacing, the noise goes with the speed of the car, my mate Wazzer check it over with me too, its not wheel bearings. its doing my head in, ive also checked the splash guards there fine, anyone have any ideas, cheers.

could be your inner cv's stsrting to wear or maybe even a bent alloy! i had it on a fiesta once, for ages i had this wheel besring sound. i changed all the bearings and everything else but was only cured when the wherls where changed

Is it on coilovers? because mine is and depending how low i have it, i suffer from the adjustable cog rubbing against my wheel.

have a look at the inner side of the wheel to see if there are any marks on it too, that might help you find the cause.

He's running 15mm spacers on the front so it's not catching the strut...

Rob bring her round again and we'll have a look

Sounds like the brakes are binding a bit? Did you reverse the brake piston back in when you did it? Because that might cause the brakes to bind, if it is the brakes making the sound.

Defo not the brakes coz i had the same rubbing noise before and after replacing the disc's and pads.
Gona jack the whole front end up today and have another poke around.

Thanks for the replies, it's not the brakes I don't think, I've changed the discs and pads still makes the noise. Was making the same noise with the old discs on, unless the brakes were binding then as well. It's only accrrured since I've lowered it. Had it in the garage today and the mechanics couldn't figure it out.

Lol, mehanics had a look today and couldn't figure mine out either

They have suggested changing lower suspension arm and top strut bush and go from there.
In their own words "we can't identify exactly where to noise is coming from"
