Hi peeps
New to site. I have a 2.0 Golf GTi 16v. I am experiencing an issue with it. While I am driving I can hear a clicking noise as if something is going to snap off. It does not sound like knocking just a loud clicking noise. It happens mainly when I am going around a corner or dipping the clutch and accelerating again. This noise does not happen all the time its very intermittent. It does not do it on full lock either as I have checked this in a car park.
I have tried taking it to a garage but they all want me to pay labour on stripping the car to get a diagnostic on it when all I want is a rough price on how much its going to cost.
The clicking noise sometimes happens when I am driving straight but thats usually after just turning a corner and going away. It can be slightly heard when I am pulling off from a standstill and also when I put the car into reverse.
I did hear a mechanic moving the shaft thats attached to the driver side wheel and it made a similar noise when moved and not when he done the passenger side but again he said he could not say its anything in aprticular unless I pay for them to strip the car and check the shafts etc.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lee

CV joint or diff issue

Hard to diagnose, best to wait until it gets severe enough to work out what it is easily

I would get it up in the air (jack with axle stands for safety) and pull at everything I see until I find what's making the noise.
The drive shafts do like to pop off and shear the bolts usually with little warning, but I would guess something simple like a drop link myself

CV joint or diff issue
My money is on cv joint, diff normally goes with little warning

Hi thanks for replies
I have just taken car to garage to get 2 front tyres on car.
While there I got them to look at Ball joints and CV boots but nothing seems out of the ordinary.
I did notice the brake heatshield was rubbing against the brakes so i have bent this a bit away from brakes.
The car does not do it at full look but mainly when approaching a roundabout when i am dipping the clutch or when i am pulling away from a standing start and at low speeds.
It isnt doing it as bad now that i have bent the heatshield around brake but its still there.....slightly.
Mainly going around corners / roundabouts and when reversing or pulling away but not at full lock.
Does anyone think it can be a clutch / gearbox issue and also does anyone know if this model has spring loaded driveshaft as there is a bit of play on the driverside back and forward but mechanic said it could be that its spring loaded but he isnt sure if this is sprong loaded.
Sorry for story
Any help appreciated as I cant start doing what I need to visually until its mechanically sound and also the fact I have children I dont want to drive around in a dangerous car.
Cheers

Checking thr CV joints are easy.
Turn the steering wheel as much left as you can, then drive slowly forward, and backwards. Repeat the thing by doing it like before but this time turn your steering wheel right (and do the same thing. forward/backwards). You should hear a large knocking if they are bad.
Thats the absolutly easiet way to check if something is wrong.
It could also be the splines that are worn, but that would not make a "clicking" sound. But one thinkg i leaned about cars, is that nothing is logical

Find another mechanic mate! talking out his arse!
They aint spring loaded.

Well since its got better now you bent the shield back that must be your problem.
Take the wheels off and have a good look. Might need replacing.
