Title: MDI or USB what is the standard now and what lead is supplied?
Post by: p3asa on 09 June 2014, 09:37
Picked my car up on Saturday  Lovely to drive, I'll get the obligatory pics up soon.

Anyway the lead that came with the car was a MDI ipod lightning connector.
I don't have the new iphone but since my daughter has one and will be driving the car occasionally I thought that's fair enough.
So as the salesman is showing me various controls I noticed the port in front of the gear stick where the ashtray should logically be, the port is a normal USB port yet the salesman claims the car came with a MDI lead?

He didn't have a clue what lead I should have got so I made the long drive home leadless

Is the USB port now standard?

What lead should I have got?

If you order the Nav Pro (and possibly the Nav, not 100% on this), the standard now is to have a USB port, which you can use the normal white Apple leads with to connect an iPhone or iPod, or use a normal USB lead to connect an Android phone, etc.
The MDI leads they include are redundant now, goodness knows why they still include them.

PS. If you have adv. tel. prep you can also use the USB in the armrest compartment that used to be only for charging for interfacing with the Nav Pro too!

My car (BW11) has the Discover Nav, and it came with the MDI socket along with a blue collar cable (30 pin), and a green collar cable (Lightning). The salesman did ask which Apple devices I had, so that the right cables came with it.

Cheers.
Yeah I have the Nav Pro so that will be why its USB.
Seems crazy that the car came with a MDI cable then.
Are VW meant to supply a USB - ipod lead?

I don't think so, as you can just use the lead that came with your iPod, iPhone etc.

if you have the advanced telephone and sat nav pro then you get front USB and Aux point?

That's what mine came with (even though salesman gave me an MDI cable )

Mine plays using the apple cable into the USB point, but you cant pull up playlists, select tracks etc on the car's display screen?!?!?! any ideas please?

Thanks

I have the Nav pro and came with the MDI. I think they have all changed to usb now? Not sure which is better, you may get more functionality with the MDI?

Ours is BW16 with Nav Pro and came with a USB port but we were given an MDI lead too - apparently the cars still come with them even when no MDI is fitted!

Oddly, when we saw the car in the compound it had a green collar lead but when we picked the car up we were given a retail packed red collar lead and no sign of what the car was delivered with  No matter as both are useless

I have the green collar MDI lead with my GTi but I find it terrible in terms of design and connection reliability. Is it possible to get a MDI to USB adapter or indeed is it a big job to swap the MDI socket for a USB one?

You can get them but probably best to avoid the bloated dealer price !!

eBay do them too. Quality unknown!

My newly purchased GTD from local VW dealer came with both MDI to Lightning and MDI to iPod leads, perhaps I was just lucky ?
