Title: 4 wheel alignment
Post by: 1.8Tgolf_Chris on 04 June 2014, 19:23
Need to get the alignment sorted after changing all manner of things, one of my concerns is the rear axle is off by half inch or so.
Will somewhere like kwikfit sort this during their alignment i know it would only take loosening the bracket on the rear axle and moving it slightly
I DID ask them on the phone, and as per get some perky tit saying alot but doubt he knew what the f i was talking about.
They quoted me 40 quid and a print out

Its not true laser alignment

You need to find a garage with a Hunter or equalivalent alignment machine

Kwiksh!t wil literally ensure your front wheels are pointing forward

Had the alignment done using a hunter but with no printout which is abit poor ? it drives better but driving home the car wants to go left quite noticeably if i didnt hold the steering wheel id end up in a river
I know they did not touch the trackrod ends + i need new ones anyway will getting new ones and having them fitting properly sort that problem out

The setup on this platform are extremely sensitive to road camber.

When it's all aligned it'll pull left when on the the left and right on the right.

If you manage to find a peice of tarmarc that's like a snooker table it'll go in a straight line.

The pull shouldn't be excessive, but a constant gentle tugging, is normal... said the actress to the bishop.

fair point, i think the issue is pretty excessive it wants to throw me into the kerb i think there is some issue related to tierods as that would make the steering wheel center ? im guessing - But i dont know i am waiting for advice -  the alignment was done on a hunter

Took it back to the garage, they reakon both worn driveshafts and trackrod ends is why it pulls left?  To be honest i couldnt argue as i dont know myself but the tit started churping on saying i got wheel spacers, the car is high milege getting right cheeky.
The car was perfect before i changed the arms and ball joints as i told them therefore milege and spacers is bullsh!t answers
Sick of cowboy f**king places doing sh!t poor jobs and trying to pull a fast one, id of been better off at kwikfit. So when i get a printout from another garage to say how far wrong the alignment is, at least i can claim my money back when i take them to a small claims court for doing bad job
Moral of the story, high tech machinery is only as good as the technician using it, in my case extremely bad

They've set it up badly, end of. Pulling to the left to me means they have set the passenger wheel up with too much toe out or they haven't set the steering wheel/rack central before adjusting the tracking. Ideally it wants to be set in with 1degree toe in to drive straight

I will be back there in the week, just frustrates me i got to take more time of work now, But driving it this weekend i upped the tyre pressure to 36ish, they set the pressure to must of been 30 or under but since im getting less steering wobble and slightly less pull sounds rather Odd i know?  Still isnt right though i will mention the 1 degree toe in

So today had the tracking done again but this time at kwikfit, luck of the draw a few of the guys there have experience with the mk4 fitting coilovers and lowing situ
With the car steering left they set it as much as possible to the right within the margin but their investigation concluded my rear axle is slightly pissed potentially causing the extra steer to the left which im getting, we checked Fender to ground measurements and all are about the same so it wasnt odd heights or anything
Even driving on the right side of a cambered road she only just stays centre so id be ok in france for that matter
Beam alignment next then  :undecided:

So why didn't they sort the rear beam while you were there?

kwikfit didnt want the job, and pretty much said they dont have the right gear to do it

I agree majority of the time ive been in kwikfit they are idiots, my local branch actually has people that have good knowledge and the manager drives a modified a3 so very understanding of alignment issues
Previous to them i used http://www.alignmycar.co.uk/ Went to a alignment place that usues a hunter and he completey f**ked the car up and said its because my driveshaft had a bit of play and i have wheel spacers
