Hi Chaps,
As you may know I have just purchased my Mk6 GTI.
I have noticed on the remote there is a button to open the boot. But when you press it, it does unlock but doesn't open up?
Should it open up? I suspect not? Which seems a little odd as you still have to use the handle to raise it?
However, if you replaced the neumatic arms (if that's right??) with stronger ones, would it open once you press the button?
Has this been covered before/anyone done it?
Regards,
Martin

It just pops the boot few mm there is a boot pop mod youtube it

Just had a look.
ECS Tuning in the states do this kit (with the stronger struts) for $88.95. Which is good. However, when you add the shipping to the UK it's not as tempting.
Any one know if anyone else does this in the uk?

Martin

The boot button on your key fob unlocks the boot only (for a few seconds). It will re-lock the boot after a few seconds of non-activity and/or lock the boot once you have opened and closed again.
I don't tend to use this button though as if the key is accidentally left in the boot then could be in a situation !

Press once to unlock then use the badge to open.
Press and hold to pop slightly then open using the badge to lift.

Just thinking about this. I take it at any speed the button on the remote doesn't work?
It's one thing accidentally popping your boot at low speeds. It would be another to accidentally hit the button at low speeds and your boot pops up!! :embarrassed:

Sounds like this has happened to you before, how?
The key buttons don't operate whilst the car is in motion.

Hi there,
No it hasn't happened to me but I was just wondering if it could happen in motion?...I did think you wouldn't be able to accidentally do it though...Only had the GTI two days..lol
Interesting link to the thread on the R site. Not sure I'm happy to "touch up" when swapping the ball pins to be honest?

Hmmm...? Bugger!
Now I've noticed that when I open the boot with the remote it's not actually opening it without pressing it several times. I press the button, then hold the button down. And it looks and sounds like it's opened. But then when I try and open it by pulling at the bottom edge of the boot (not the badge), it's like on the latch still and not unlocked. So I have to keep pressing it until it releases. Am I doing something wrong?
Not much point in doing this mod if the boot doesn't actually release??

Martin

Press once to unlock then use the badge to open.
Press and hold to pop slightly then open using the badge to lift.
I never knew the boot pops slightly if you hold the button.
Only had the car a year and a half
And a mk6 for a year and a half before that :embarrassed:

Now I could be wrong, but I think you need to use the vw badge to release the catch once you've unlocked it via the key button (regardless of whether you press once or press and hold). It won't release if you unlock with button and try to lift from edge of boot. At least that's the way it is with mine, same as yours.
It is puzzling though as people have done the boot pop mod so there must be a workaround :undecided:

I think if you were to press an hold and pull up stright away like the mid does it would work otherwise mine works the same as yours

I just wouldn't see the point in having a button on the remote if you needed to use the badge to open it anyway??
Why!!! Lol!
If that were the case and you did the mod, the boot lid still wouldn't open even with the stronger struts?
Maybe yours and mine have faulty latches?
Any thoughts chaps?

Ah Haaaa!... Looking at the pdf instructions, apparently the Golfs of a certain year require some diagnostic coding too once this mod has been done, as when you release the boot with the remote, it goes onto a secondary latch!!! Diagnostic coding stops the secondary latch!
Also, I heard that after the mod, the hatch can some times stick out slightly (alering the shut line). This can also be rectified by re adjusting the boot latch a couple of mm!
Great!

That explains why you need to release using the badge then. At least it's not broken.

Mine also doesn't pop once the boot button is held. Do you have further info about the coding needed to disable the secondary mechanism? What PDF do you mean?
Was looking to get the ecs kit but didn't bother as I thought my latch was faulty. When I put her in for a service a couple of months back in asked VW and they said that was meant to be the way it works. I couldn't be bothered to argue with them that people had it popping.
Any info appreciated

Hi jonny,
I've found lots of conflicting info about this. Apparently, different year models have diff boot locks. Some have the secondary locks, some don't. And you can't change the programming. I can't find a definitive answer and I'm not sure what's right or wrong? I can't believe there would be different lock settings??
Until it's clear, I can't do the mod!
Frustrating!

I have done the boot open mod and it's ace  comes in handy especially with 2 kids and Hands full of shopping!

I found this a very strange one too, why give u the button if the boot isn't going to open fully. Now I looked into the boot pop mod and then purchased the parts required via a group buy on another forum. So as standard when I pressed and held the button the boot pops of the catch but through its own weigh kind of latches back on so you still have to use the badge to open it. I then fitted Leon ball pins, fabia struts and scirocco bumpers(which I believe is a cheaper alternative to the ecs tuning kit) then press and hold the button and hey presto the boot pops open an inch which only required lifting slightly to open fully from the boot edge not the badge. It didn't pop all the way open as some have. Then I tried to close the boot having stronger struts makes this slightly more difficult so that isn't great. I decided to live with it and see how it went.
After 2 days of having the new gear fitted the tailgate started to rattle and squeak like mad, nothing I did could help it. So I decided to remove it. Whilst doing this I decided to try one thing so I fitted the original ball pins and struts but kept the scirocco bumpers and hey presto it achieved the same result pops the boot open an inch so effectively it lifts it clear of the latch so u can just lift with one finger and tailgate lifts up. However having the longer scirocco bomber fitted I noticed the boot didn't quite fit flush the tail lights didn't seem to line up properly and this was following the guide from ECS Tuning on YouTube.
So now I have 2 fabia struts, 2 Leon ball pins and 2 scirocco bumper lying in my garage, and when I need to open my boot I just do it as VW intended when they designed the clever system of making the boot badge the boot release. So far it's working out well and the tailgates is back to being rattle free.
My advise would be to forget about the stupid button that looks like it will open the boot and just use it normal, don't buy a boot pop kit there just pants.

Hi Obbzi, What year is your GTI? No secondary latch or protruding boot lid after fitting?
Steve... very frustrating!!! Is yours a Mk7? if not, what year pls?

Mine too! but when I press the remote boot release, it goes on to a secondary latch (so you need to open it with the badge). How did you get around that problem so it just opens up?

I didn't have to do anything to get the boot to open, just fitted the kit which took 5 mins and it worked!

I saw a link the other day where they changed the boot struts so that when you opened with the key the boot opened, and I read somewhere that the boot struts out of the Skoda Octavia do the same, I will try and find the link again and post it.
Cheers Josh

Yep I now about the kit mate (thanks), but apparently there is a secondary lock (which appears to be on mine). When you press the button on the remote, it doesn't release? So at this point, doing the mod would be a waste of time if there's no way around the secondary lock?,,, although quite a few have done it with no probs...Frustrating!!
