Title: Tyre rotation
Post by: Booth11 on 31 May 2014, 20:34
Hi all

It's time to replace my original rear tyres which are currently on the front.  I'm sticking with Conti SC 5p's which I rate highly.

Now I know opinion is divided on whether new tyres should go on front or rear, and I fall into the latter camp.  However it's only 4 months since I replaced the worn out fronts and had them rotated to the rear.  So the rears have got just over 3,600 miles on them.  Is it worth rotating again and putting the new ones on the rear or just stick 'em on the front?

I'd go for the new on the front.

I go with new on the front on a front wheel drive. Don't like under Streer.

Rear tyres are what gives your car stability, hence new to the rear ALWAYS. Even if it's a FWD.

In case of Booth11 - if they've only ran 3.5k miles on the front then you're OK to keep them there and put the new ones on the back... Unless you drive like a maniac you wouldn't have worn them a lot.

Agree with the above about new tyres being better on rear and that is my usual practice.  But in this case the tyres with only 3.5k are on the rear NOT the front.  They've been on rear since new, 4 months ago, so they shouldn't be worn much.  When I replace the fronts in couple weeks (which have 17k on) I'm not sure it's worth putting them on the rear as the current rears are relatively new.  Sorry if that wasn't clear in my original post.

As i've said before i NEVER put new on the rear how often do you drive like a clown to invoke understeer? Majority braking: front power: front steering: front weight: front thats me tho

I don't agree Matty, I'm with itavaltalainen on this.  As I said, opinion is divided on this issue and has been argued many times over and no doubt will be again and again.

I guess in my case it probably won't make much difference either way. I'll probably end up switching new to rear as usual, even if the existing rears don't have many miles on them.

I'm another "new on the rear" voter but with only 3k on the rears it would be pointless swapping them to the front Madame Booth no matter how bad your car OCD is!
So yes, go with your original thoughts and those of italvaltainan.

Well, of those two, I'd better go along with the first description, even though the second sounds like more fun

Common sense will prevail, I'll stick the new tyres on the front.

Normally I'd say put new tyres on the rear, but in this particular case, I'd put them on the front.

If you keep the part worns on the front with say 6mm of tread on them, the new ones on the rear will always have at least 2mm more, as they won't wear as quickly as the fronts. Putting the new tyres on the front will mean with the fronts wearing faster than the rears, there will be a point in time where they have caught up with the wear rate of the rears and you'll have all 4 tyres with equal tread depth. On that particular day, pick out all the stones out of the tyres, make sure that your center caps are the right way round, jack the car up to rotate the wheels so that all the valves are at 6 o Clock and your OCDness will be at peace. Well mine would anyway.

Do I detect a heavy hint of sarcasm
