Are the temp sensors the same on a 1.8 and 2.0 engine? I have a 1.8 AAM auto and am going to try and change the temp
sensor to see if that improves poor fuel economy. just wondering if the temp sensors are the same for the afirementioned engines. Wondering as prices vary for the part depending on engine size but they appear identicle? other question-will I minimise fluid loss if I unscrew the coolant reservoir beforehand?

yes, unscrew cap first to release pressure, then replace.
temp senders on 1.8 and 2.0 manuals are the same, would imagine the same is true for auto. also get the o-ring (iirc 19.6x3.6)
might still have a temp sender from my 2.0, can check when i get back from work.

As long as the colour and connections are the same it will be the same part

I did this job on my 2.0. Unscrew the cap to release the pressure. But then screw it back in - it reduces the amount of coolant you lose.
Buy genuine. Last year mine was about a tenner IIRC and came with the C clip. I can't remember if it also came with the O ring or whether I bought that separate at the same time.
If you don't buy genuine, make sure you get a C clip with it. Breaking the old one when removing it is a near certainty as they go brittle with the heat and age.
Lastly, when fitting the new one, push it home hard so you compress the O ring to allow the C clip to slide in without brute force.

thanks everyone. I will give it a go when I change the thermostat and see if that helps with fuel economy...:)

I'd just check (with ohm meter) that it works.... no need to replace something that isn't faulty ;)
