Title: steering rack gone

Hey guys wondering if you could check this video out.. basically today I heard a horrible whinning noise when turning so checked pas fluid and it was empty so bought some from shop and filled it up.. drove home and it was empty again, so I checked for a leak and found this.. im takin it I need a new steering rack but what would of caused this.. is the pump shot too or just need a new rack cheers guys

Exactly the same thing happened to mine mate, basically the chrome plating on the rods is crap, so eventually it flakes off, the rod rusts and wrecks the seals in the steering rack. Get yourself a nice audi tt steering rack to replace it.

Cheers mate..Was the pump ok when you just did the rack.. I might av to drive it to the garage on tuesday will it be ok if I keep the fluid topped up all the way

Same happened to mine, common fault, put a brand spanking new one in, now the car is for sale  :rolleyes:

yeah my pump was fine, just dont let it run dry!

Cheers beppe.. just kinda worried ive got to drive about 25 mins to the garage .. needed to know if it would be ok if I just keep topping it up till I get there
