Title: Where's my oil going?
Post by: Gti_Jamo on 21 May 2014, 18:57
Right ok, First off a brieff summary. I have a Corrado G60 with a Gof Rallye engine i rebuilt a couple of month ago. The engine sat for a while beforehand and moisture got into one of the cylindrers leaving a rust ring with minor pitting about an inch and a half from tdc. I decided i'd re-use the old piston rings so to help sort the issue then fit new ones after summer. Anyway the engine runs and drives great, has good equal compression and no burning oil issues. The problem is it has used about a litre and a half of oil over 1000 miles. I kind of assumed it'd be blow back issues under load forcing the oil from crankcase breather via cam cover down the boost return then down into my front-mounted IC but had it off this evening and it's bone dry in there. So yeah i'm a bit stumped where it's going, it was 5w30 so quite thin but about to change it for 10w40. Its draining as I type.

Were the old rings coked up? Did you revise valve stem seals?

5w30 is not really ideal, would not use that in a G60 engine..... neither is 10w40.
I'd go for a decent 5w40, if not 0w40, they tend to have slightly higher high temp viscosity than 10w40 (and it's not gonna run out cold :D )

Hi, no the rings were fine, the engine internally was in very good shape as it's a low miler. New stems seals fitted but like I said it'n not burning oil as i've not had a lick of blue smoke under load or on clodsed throttle overrun. Plugs not fouled up in the slightest. My last vr6 was an old smoker so i'm no stranger to oil burning issues. There is a wee bit of oil in the charger silencer housing but not much at all to be a concern. Doesn't appear to be any excessive blowby symptoms either when revving while stationary. I've put he 10w40 in so will see what happens, then take it from there. I don't rag it plus the Rallye engine runs a bit cooler than the original engine so not been seeing high oil temps. About 105 degrees on motorway on a hot day is the highest i've seen it go as been monitoring it closely. Not had it out for a run yet. It is a bit of a mystery thats for sure.

You will always burn oil in a new engine rebuild, it should ease over the next few thousand miles, just keep an eye on it, if the IC has no oil in it and neither does the inlet and its not burning it in big quantities (blue smoke) just top up as necessary. always check it every few days / week at the most

Hi mate, it does appear to be burning it a little, someone i kenew who was behind me pointed out the odd wee puff of blue smoke on gear changes but not enough for me to be able to see it from inside. No big deal really, i'll sort it out over winter.

its not uncommon on a newly built engine, especially when using thin oils
I have built / rebuilt quite few A series engines and all of them did this the first few K
