Title: Golf R used prices
Post by: Hobojim on 17 May 2014, 10:22
Morning all,

I have been looking at getting a mk6 Golf R and 'handing down' my GTI to the GF. I have been rather surprised by the used prices. A 2010 (same age as my GTI) is about 20-22k. I thought this was a bit rich for a 4yo car. I did find on auto trader a 60 plate with 16k miles for 25k! Considering a brand new R is 30k and by all accounts a big improvement on the mk6 how are the used cars holding such high prices?

There isn't that many for sale and I agree they are overpriced. Have you looked at the S3? May find there are more options although I prefer the Golf R.

At those prices you may as well get the 7R/GTI.

The base price for a manual 7R might only be £30K but most people will spec it up to £35-40k, same with the 6R. I spent £38K on my 6R and £37K on my 7R.

Shame the 7R is unlikely to hold it's value quite as well but should still be pretty strong, i'm surprised that the release of the 7 hasn't affected the prices of the 6 at all? Having said that there are deals to be had just need to be patient and keep looking.

I test drove one in the Easter holidays. 2012 plate if I remember correctly and they wanted £25k. No way was I paying that so we called it a day and moved on. I could buy a 7gti for that money plus I've seen several 135s for that too.
I've said before that no Golf is worth £30k plus and neither is a 2 year old Golf worth £25k. Personally, I think VW have gone as far as they can with he price of a Golf. Anything starting with a 3 is just getting plain daft!

You say that Andy, but if you apply the Mars bar scale to it, stacks up. In 1992 a Mars bar cost 24p and the list price of a Golf GTI 16V was £12,500. A Mars bar today costs 60p, so 2.5 times as much. Multiply the price of the GTI by the same amount and you get £31,250.

Considering that the Mars bar has got smaller and the Golf has got bigger, it could be said that the Golf is better value than it was back then.

It really all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day.. you can get a lovely 135i coupe for 25k with low miles or a similar age golf 6R.

Or you could say mars just rips you off more than VW

£12500 (1992) = 22577.50

Fair point Simon with the Mars bar comparison. Put it another way, any Golf starting with a 3 is expensive but the comparison with what else is out there for £30k is the killer for me. You can buy some serious kit at that level which is far more prestigious than a VW Golf.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Golfs and would happily buy another. I just think I'll place a personal maximum of £25k on the price.

I don't think that the screen price is all that relevant to many buyers. There's not many people left that hand over their debit card for the full amount. For many, it's all down to monthly payments, so as long as predicted residuals are strong, it wouldn't matter if the list price began with a 4 or even a 5.

Exactly, we are in a rent a car culture.  Next to no one owns new cars anymore sadly. The days of neighbours thinking  next door must be doing well for themselfs because of the new car on the drive (thats when its wasn't a white company car) has long gone.

We brought our cars new and there ours now we aren't rich just careful.  I often think that is why people don't care for there cars and don't care if they damage someone else's door dents parking damage for example

I have thought the same for a long time.
i would even go to the level that rent-a-cars should be labelled to help others avoid them. Maybe a small round sticker similar to some rental cars have. company cars should all be sign written..

12% discounts on mk7 Rs via brokers do make the mk6 prices look expensive imo.

Same here.  Always bought our personal cars outright with cash/debit card. There's something very satisfying about saving for a car, my R fund is now 2/3 of the way to target and it's a nice feeling.  Makes a big difference to me knowing that I own a car, don't think I'd feel the same if it was leased etc.

Took a ride in a colleagues's brand new nissan juke this week  which is effectively rented and she asked why I didn't just do the same.  I explained but she didn't get it and just said she couldn't care less about owning the thing.  Mind you maybe if I had a juke I'd feel the same

Exactly the same here, I always like to own mine and a mate of mine doesn't like it when he's boasting about how he's got an Audi A5 when you point out he doesn't actually own a single piece of it!

As for the Nissan Juke             Nissan Puke!
