Hi all.
When starting my 09" GTI i get a 1-2s long rattle which sounds just like the ones on bad chain tensioner videos i found on web.
But here's the catch. I don't get that rattle when my engine is completely cold (which is the common sign of bad chain tensioner as far i know?), but only when my car is sitting warm for a short amount of time, like 45 to 60 minutes. When my car is sitting overnight or 2 hours and more i get zero rattles on first start.
Is it possible that this could be oil related? I have Aral Supetronic III Long Life 5W-30 oil in it but my car didn't had long life intervals before. I'm thinking about changing my oil to Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40.
Here is the link to the soundfile i recorded earlier when my car was sitting for aprox. 45 minutes.

Greets,

Errrggghh....thats sounds disgusting. Thats a GTI?
I posted a few clips on chain tensioner and it didnt sound like that. Yours isnt so much as a chain rattle, if more of a mechanical rattle.
Like you said, it only usually happen when the pressure has dropped overnight or after 4 hours cooldown.
Think yours maybe a bad injector or something. Where does the rattle sound like its coming from when you lift the hood?

The sound is coming straight from chain area.

Ive had a similar noise at work on a TSFI engine and was due to a stretched chain,The chain was catching against the guides
