Title: Questions/checks when collecting your GTI/D....
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 13 May 2014, 11:56
Hi guys.

So I'm collecting my car on Monday. It's the first time I'll be collecting a brand new car, I would like some advice on what questions to ask and what to check?

I'm starting to write a list and this is what I have so far...

Questions:
Automatic auxiliary heater how to
How to bed engine in correctly
Adv phone prep
Climate comfort screen

Checks:
Iphone integrates with USB
Check for Gtd badge on key fob
Check Car mats are present

What else should I be asking/checking?

Cheers guys

I'll piggy back this if you don't mind, thank you very much - Collecting on Thursday  First new car for me too.

I'm taking a list of my options to check off (including servicing/warranty extension paperwork if you added them.)
Going to walk around the car and check for any obvious scratches and dings, other than that I'm none the wiser either.

Run-in, I think each dealer gives different info - from my research the general opinion appears to be make sure you use varied revs and let the engine warm, and avoid red lining it :) I'm going to try and limit my motorway miles in the first 1000 (long journeys at least - and if I do have to make any I'll vary the revs by being an annoying tw*t - alternating from 60 - 70 and usng different gears :))

Check the bodywork and wheels out for scratches, scuffs and small dings – in a dry area. Never collect a car parked outside in heavy rain – you may not see a fault that is there otherwise and once you leave the forecourt they’ll say you caused any found damage unless it is an obvious manufacturing defect.

Make sure the locking wheelnut adapter is with the spare wheel.

Make sure that any paid-for option is there – build errors and dealers forgetting to add options to the order do happen.

I think you’ve covered pretty much anything else

I would be checking the paintwork/glass/wheels/interior trim over carefully to ensure there is no damage.

Also, check that the spec matches what you've ordered - mine was easy as there was only Discover Nav & Winter Pack to look out for.

Make sure you get all the paperwork for e.g. service plans etc. The V5 & tax disc usually get posted directly to you shortly after delivery (I think! certainly was for tax disc, almost certain the V5 came through the post as well)

No probs ffrank! :)

I guess checking the bodywork for damage etc is a given.

Did any of you get much fuel in the car when you collected?

I got half a tank of petrol, which was more than I was expecting as the order form said I was going to get 15 litres.

I would avoid long motorway journeys like the plague for the first 500 miles of the car’s life. If you’re collecting from a brokered dealership 200 miles from home etc then you might need to take an A-road route for a lot of the way home. I wouldn’t have it driving at constant speed in 6th on a motorway for more than 50 miles in the first 500 and no more than 100 from 501-1000 miles.

My worst VW was a MK5 Golf (140TDI PD) that I bought from Burnley then immediately drove down to Southampton to see relatives (280 miles), hopped onto the ferry to Cherbourg with it and with about 350 miles on, it gave an amber alert for oil – it has drank a litre, taking it below the dipstick. Topped it up, drove around Cherbourg for the day, filled up with cheap booze, took it back to Southampton and onwards home to Newcastle. Another 500 miles on from Calais’ top-up, it needed another litre and drank a litre of oil every 1000 miles after that. Ongoing MPG was sh!te too for the whole time I owned it. Glazed bores I presume from it’s very easy run in.

I know this is controversial but I will be doing some vacuum pulls as soon as I get the engine warm. Did this with my current car and it doesn't use any oil and runs like new. There again it is a Honda.

Take the car to about 50-60 mph, take foot off of throttle. Engine braking forces the piston rings against the bores.

There are a few good checklists on the Mk6 section

WOW, that's a comprehensive check list! Always good to check the body work thoroughly - on my Wife last car we found a scratch on the front bumper above the number plate - looked like a streak of polish.

As for running in (and I know this can be a contentious issue) I can only go on experience, but both my Wife's car's have been driven 100 miles+ back from the dealer on the motorway and neither ever used any oil. And my last car was in Italy within three weeks of me collecting it - 2,000 miles mostly motorways through France/Switzerland/Italy using cruise control etc. 50,000 on the clock now, never had to top the oil up even after a recent track day.

I keep it below 4000rpm for the first 500 miles and then gradually increase the revs up too 1,000 miles. Be gentle on the brakes/tyres/gearbox/clutch to give everything a chance to bed in. I can remember the 'old' days when cars used running in oil for the first 1,000 miles.

I'm no expert - but from the production line footage I've watched don't the car manufacturers tend to run each car up through the rev range on a set of rollers before they leave the factory?

Yes. They should be fitted at PDI by the dealership.
Title: Re: Questions/checks when collecting your GTI/D....
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 13 May 2014, 21:50
And if not I guess I can politely ask them to be fitted? From what I've read on here a lot of dealers forget to fit them...
Title: Re: Questions/checks when collecting your GTI/D....
Post by: valvebounce on 13 May 2014, 22:42
Engine braking forces the piston rings against the bores.
When the throttle is open the combustion gases push against the inside diameter of the piston ring, forcing it to expand radially onto the liner bore. On the overrun (engine braking) when the fuel is cut there is no combustion so the radial load is much lower, there is only the static ring tension plus the gas load due to pumping.

No, sadly not. The list was copied from the mk5/6 forum. The bottle opener was a lovely touch, as was the exclusive owners manual folder with gti badge and red stripe. VW are much more focused on profit now. Shame.

Does anyone know if it's possible to feel for any transport blocks by squeezing the shock absorber gaiters with the car on the ground please?
Title: Re: Questions/checks when collecting your GTI/D....
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 16 May 2014, 00:01
I'm also interested in this marnie. Seen a lot on here about the pucks but how can you check if they've been left in? Is it just a case of looking under the arches?
Title: Re: Questions/checks when collecting your GTI/D....
Post by: monkeyhanger on 16 May 2014, 07:36
You'll have to jack up the front wheels 1 at a time so that the wheel is hanging low on the suspension and there's a decent gap between the wheel top and the wheel arch. Then feel around the rubber gaiters of the shock. The bump stops are conical and don't move from the top of the suspension mount, the pucks (if there are any) are cylindrical (around an inch thick) and can slide up and down the suspension strut.

Sorry to drag this thread up again, but as I am sure there are going to be people picking up new cars in the next week I didn't want to start a new one.
I am picking mine up on Wednesday, and just wanted to clarify what cables to expect with the Nav Pro?
I have read about getting two, a lightning one and a USB. Is this right?
The car is also keyless, do you get the GTD key fobs, or anything similar?

Are there any other little touches or things that are not in the brochures?

Thanks in advance.

You don't get any cables with the pro nav, it has a usb socket in the cubby so you can connect any devices with their own cables.

Although i did get two mdi cables with mine but nowhere to stick em?? ??? ;D

You should still get the fobs even with keyless. This is one of the most missed things by dealers I think.

Stick em on eBay!

Thanks for the replies.
Never knew about the cables.
Got my music SD card sorted, and it plays in An Rns510, so hopefully no problems in the new car.
Will check the keys also..

Anything else?

You could just plug an MDI>USB female lead into it as I have done. The USB lead came with my Scirocco, so VW do make them, if you can't find a cheap one on ebay. You could even look for an MDI to mini-USB for charging phones etc while on the move.

Hi
When i collect my GTD in September 2013 spoke to the manager at Lancaster VW concerning the media to usb lead he produced a lead from his office draw and said have that on us n/c-service with a smile.

Ok so am collecting my new GTD later today and so far as far as I can tell, the only things that should come with the car are:

MDI to Lightning cable
MDI to USB cable
SD card (not the one for DNS; spare one for media ?)
GTD bezels for keys
Set of mats (carpet; rubber-mats are extra ?)
Some top-up oil (?)
First-aid kit/warning-triangle & reflective-vest (or is this an optional-extra ?)

Can anyone else think of anything I have forgotten ? I've made-up a comprehensive checklist for checking over the car as well, but handover time is just at time of closing and it's the salesman's day-off, so am sure he'll be keen to not hang around too long !

They won't give you an SD card, only one for the sat nav.  You won't get a lightning cable either (I assume you mean the lightning adapter for an iPhone?) - in fact you'll be lucky to get a lead at all for your iPhone - but you can pick up a little USB one that fits perfectly off Amazon for £3.99

Rubber mats will cost you extra - carpet mats are standard, getting some "free" top up oil will depend on the dealer as some do and some don't. Never got safety kit with any of 7 new. VWs (I think Audi give out warning triangle and high via jacket - they used to). Non-lightning apple lead given, no USB lead as standard (they are available, not standard equipment with the car).

Thats handy to know as pick mine up in November. With the discount I am getting dont really expect too many freebies. Have been told I will get a full tank a fuel, is that standard practice with new cars ?

Update....pleasantly surprised in all honesty, low-key affair in car-park which I said was fine with me.

Car came with two leads MDI to iPod and MDI to Lightning (iPhone 5), was told by one salesman it would only come with £20 of fuel, came with a full-tank though, tidy :-)

Correct about the safety-kit though (none as standard but you can buy them for around £25) and going back to pick-up free top-up oil over the weekend (service-department closed at time of handover).

New wheels going on tomorrow, loving it already !

When I had mine delivered I got the MDI to lightning and MDI to old Iphone cables and 3/4 fuel tank. Carpet mats as standard as well, but I've purchased a set of rubber mats which protect the interior better especially with the cr***y UK weather. No first aid or warning triangle either, I have purchased it afterwards. SD card comes only with the Navigation maps. I have purchased a 32 GB SD from Amazon for the Media.

Will post-up more pics tomorrow and start a proper thread maybe when wheels are fitted , no clues :-)

I'm having a lease GTD delivered to me next week and suspect I won't have ages to check it over.

Apart from the obvious bodywork / alloy / tyre conditions etc.  I currently have a list as follows to check all is present and correct :

- Two keys with GTD bezels
- Lightning cable
- Old IPhone cable
- SD card with Satnav Map on
- Set of 4 carpet mats
- Spare Spacesaver steel wheel in boot.
- Locking Wheel Nut Key in boot plus jack / toolkit etc and check the key fits the nuts.
- Full set of manuals inc. Sat Nav manual and stamped PDI service book in service wallet.

Can anyone correct this or add to it please ?  The car should have the latest MY16 additions - MIB2, keyless and winterpack.

Cheers

You won't get an old iPhone cable and doubt you'll get a lightening cable either. It's usb now instead of mdi.

Ok thanks for that.

Can anyone confirm exactly what leads should come with the latest MIB2 system ?

You can buy 10cm leads on line which fit better with a phone or whatever you're using in the mini glovebox (behind the gearstick).
