Title: Rear suspension noise
Post by: CR4ZYHOR5E on 10 May 2014, 10:44
Anyone get a hollow knocking sound coming from rear suspension at low speed. Sounds like there is a piece of cork attached by a piece of string to something in the suspension. Not overly loud but definitely noticeable.

That'll most likely be the balls on the end of the parcel shelf strings, they hang down when the boot is closed, used to be really noticable on the mk6 but i haven't noticed it on the 7 up to now.

There is a TPI from VW about this issue. My car has been at the dealers for this and they are waiting for new shock absorbers. They tell me it's a common problem for GTI and GTD's.

Mine is in today for this. My noise seems to be coming mainly from the drivers side.

I was told VW have this week brought out a redesigned shock absorber so it's likely my car will get those.

They showed me the computer with 3 other people booked in for today with the same issue.

So I've just been told that ordering of the replacement shock absorbers is on hold. No explanation as to why.

Dealer rang me today to tell me the new parts were in. I've booked my car in next week for work.

Frustratingly my dealer is claiming these replacement parts are still on stop and they are unable to order them from VW. 3 weeks now and they still can't provide any more information other than that it is a supply chain problem.

My dealer has "ordered" new parts over two weeks ago.  Still waiting for them to arrive.

I have done 800 miles now on the new shocks and no issues so the fix seems to work. Now they just need to sort out the crappy wipers and i will be happy.

I've got a squeeking noise coming from both rear shocks but mines got DCC. Front is noisy again over slow bumps.

Will they change both the front and the rear shocks?

Just rears as far as I'm aware. That's certainly where the noise is coming from on mine.

Drove for a bit without the stereo on for once and noticed a squeak that was frequent and didn't change with speed, it seemed to go away after 5 miles when I made my first stop for lights, couldn't tell if it was front or back.

Mines got the DCC and the nearside front "clonks" or "patters" over bumps (depending on the severity and frequency). Funnily enough, when you move into Comfort or Sport the noise goes away - only to return a short while after you move it back to normal (but not immediately, which is even more weird).

It's booked in with my local dealer for 2 days - the week after next - so I'll report back! :nerd:

Be interesting to see what happens with a DCC car. I had mine booked in but couldn't go unfortunately but I've got clunking from the front and squeaks from the rear in all modes.

Unbelievably my VW dealer is still claiming these parts are not able to be ordered in. 2 months now.

Have VW issued a TPI for this issue? I have clunky suspension & a loud click on full lock and would love some new shock absorbers.

I too have knocking/clunking from rear of car over badly surfaced roads.
Car is at dealer today, will report on their findings. Also notchy gearchange being looked at, worst on changing 1st to 2nd gear.

I had this issue. After several trips to the dealership i finally got it solved. They replaced the shops, there is a TPI for this i beleive. the new shock had a different part number to the shocks i had.

Although they "fixed" it, the suspension is still noisy. Just that "clunk" noise is no longer there which is good, however, still a reallly noisy car this is

Just got the car back. They will fit new rear shock absorbers next week. They say notchy gear change is ok
Any one read long term test in auto express magazine of the gti, the gear linkage was adjusted resulting in a " snappy and precise" shift action. So it can be improved.
I shall wait and see if it improves with more use.

How many miles does the car have on it?

My gear change was slightly notchy but I put it down to being a new car. 2500 miles in and it's fine.

Mileage about the same as yours, 2300, glad to hear your gear change improved though so mine might with a few more miles

Hi GiT1984

Did you ever get ur suspension sorted and if so what was the problem?

Ur description is similar to what I've been experiencing for a while although the cars been inspected and was told all fine.... I also have DCC.

Cheers in advance

I had an issue with noise coming from passenger side rear suspension when going slow, booked it in and VW told me something was not sitting right so they made the adjustment and it is fine now.

I've gotten used to mine creaking like the titanic now, just gonna replace the strut top mounts when I change to the VWR springs and hope that fixes it.

Had my rear shock replaced last week, which has really made it quieter over bumps and uneven surfaces.  Still quite a bit of road noise, but I think that is the Bridgestones as much as anything.

I've got mine in the workshop today.  It's like having a bass drum in the boot on some roads.  The courtesy Up! is a lot quieter!  Let's hope that mine doesn't already have the revised shocks fitted.

Apparently mine is normal.  I have specifically asked them to confirm what model of shock I have though as they haven't done this yet.  Time will tell.

Hi GiT1984, was there an update from your dealer visit?

Thanks.
Title: Re: MK7 GTI Performance rear suspension noise
Post by: fuelboss on 09 March 2015, 21:49
My GTI MK7 has already had a damper change on the rear and it made no difference. That particular  hollow clonking, knocking sound has nothing to do with parcel shelf balls or spare wheel etc as I have removed everything and still the noise remains. Check out youtube and you can read more about my experience and that of others and listen to two recordings of the irritating noise www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_1cLNtr75Y (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_1cLNtr75Y) You can hear one of my recordings www.the-algarve.co.uk/Recording-in-GTI-041114 (http://www.the-algarve.co.uk/Recording-in-GTI-041114)

The car goes back to dealer last week in March. My car has standard dampers and not DCC.

I just do not understand that so many people have complained and yet few have had the issue cured even after a damper changed. The part number of my replacements are 500 613 029GL and as far as I understand this is still the most up to date part number. Strange that after a couple of years in production  VW are still selling Golfs right at this moment that require a damper change. if the dampers are the main source of the noise then why do we still have a problem in 2015?

I bet there are many with this peculiar noise that just never report it.

Mine makes the exact sound as your second recording but nowhere near as often and constant as yours. Mine went in to VW and they repositioned the rear gaitors which made it a little better.

Thanks for the post.

Interesting to read that you have DCC, so that means it is a different dampers altogether from mine, yet you still had an issue! So it appears to be the case that vehicles with and without DCC make the same noise.

It was good to hear of your experience and the issue of gaitors, though you say it is only a little better rather than noise completely gone. This is the first time I have read that gaitors could contribute to this noise. I feel less and less confident in VW's ability to actually identify and rectify this issue. Some owners report that a change of dampers has cured the issue while others say it doesn't.

The sound that you heard from my audio clip was really highlighting my issue as the roads I was travelling over during the recording had many pedestrian crossings and roundabout approaches fitted with raised sections to slow drivers down.

I have read that VW say that it is the valves on the dampers that make the noise. Well in my view I am sure if that were the case that VW could engineer the sound out of the part. I am so dissatisfied with what I listen to on daily basis that I feel I may be doing battle with VW in the next couple of weeks when I return the car to the dealer in England, particularly in view of the fact that the dampers were changed but made no difference. One of my questions to VW will be that if they considered that a change of dampers would rectify the issue then why didn't it.

Thanks again
