Problems;
1) I have got a 1.8 GTi Cabrio MK1, DX-type engine. The engine starts perfectly when cold. After the car has been driven and the engine has warmed up it will not start again if I turn it off. I have to "turn" the engine alot of times before it starts up again.
2) The clutch is extremely heavy. The cable appears to be new. Could it be the clutch?
3) Difficult to put into 1st gear. Other gears (2nd, 3rd, Rev, etc) are OK. I have topped up the gearbox oil. Do the gear linkages need to be adjusted?
Any advice?

I had a hot start problem on my jetta 16v which was caused by a dud temp sensor telling the cold start valve it was alway's cold so when hot it was putting in un needed fuel and not starting, try disconnecting the cold start valve?/

Poor hot starting could be the non return valve in the fuel pump not holding the fuel pressure, this allows the fuel to boil in the injector pipes and causes hot start problems. To check, with the engine hot, switch off the engine and leave for 10mins. Crack one of the injector pipe unions at the metering unit and you should get a good spray of fuel, be careful as there is a fire risk :evil:.
As for the clutch, fit a genuine cable and then try it.

Ftted a new clutch cable and bulk head re-enforcement plate. Fixed the clutch problem.
Disconnected the cold start valve and made no difference to the starting problems. Tested the cold start valve using the Haynes manual test procedure and appears as if the valve is faulty. But the test relies on the Thermo Switch - so dunno what to believe.
Might change the cold start valve and thermo switch........
