alright guys, well, with looking to buy a new house and hopefully having the deeds by the end of next week as well as possible sniffs of a promotion in the next month at work i've done some calculations and looks like i'll actually be saving money believe it or not!
so, focusing on the golf i've decided i have had enough of the meager 150 - 160 BHP i have on it with all the basic mods ive done and fancy something with a bit more of a face work out when putting my foot down.
now i have been told to get a audi tt sline or a leon FR and some even said BMW m3 but lets face, i dont suite baseball hats. so going down and sticking to the golf i'm looking to increase the bajesus out of it.
what will i require, i know forged engine parts, fmic, W/M, k400 turbo, greddy manifold or custom job down the local garage, injectors, fuel pump etc, but was wondering if any one has turned a 1.8t into a 4 wheel drive to plant the power if possible? dont really fancy buying new tyres at every traffic light
any ideas? do's and dont? anything?
-
I seriously think if you are looking to plough a load of money into a car to get it to 300 BHP id start with something more than a 1.8T, I know people have done it but the amount you would spend doing it would surely outweigh the cost of starting with something faster, if it was me, i'd be looking at a jap car

I don't feel I need 4wd, it would help but I think it's fine if you run wide enough tyres, LSD and get all the suspension side of things done. I keep it on boost capped setting when it's wet but then I drive normally when it's raining.

I agree, don't feel I require 4wd but I know that Barry has a 4 motion conversion on his mk4.
-
It would be significantly easier to drop a 1.8t into a 4mo shell than convert a 1.8t to 4wd.
As for manifolds, see Matt at OCD he has his own range of manifolds, and works alongside Darkside Developments if you require a custom one.

or just buy 1 already done like i did

yip i bought mine like that but can still switch the power about with the haldex controller

A lot of food for thought really, I'll be saving roughly 200 odd a month alone in fuel as I'll be 10 minute walk from work so literally weekend use only
I have been seriously considering this but I'm getting to a point where I'm thinking that I'd like a s-line now or maybe the mk6 gt tdi
Alternatively just make do with mods supporting roughly 300bhp max and be happy, if I come across a cheap 4mo then bargain

I would go for a K300, standard manifold ported, 380cc injectors, LCR fuel pump and a good flowing FMIC with 2.5" pipework. I'd stick with standard internals and run less boost capping power & torque to 280 given the cost of rods and fitting being well over £1k unless can do the work yourself.
Consider a diff as this would help putting power down without having the extra weight of 4wd
A few K03s are making 250-260 without meth but with good flowing FMICs, uprated actuators, injectors and decats which is more than enough in a MK4 probably pushing the turbo to limit tho
-
I think 280bhp is nice enough speed for a gti as you say, anything faster is probably not practicle and I haven't decided on a second car yet to afford this one off the road, so k300 turbo, injectors, fuel pump, actuator ported manifold and fmic. Remap can be sorted out at the end. I'm not really clued up the diff, any further info on this available? And I have miltek system with 200cl sports cat fitted. Boost pipes replaced as well, will see what happens as I still have to put down the 20k+ deposit for the house I'm buying

There are a few different types of differentials from clutch packs differentials to mechanical automatic torque biasing, from what you've said it sounds like the gear driven atb diff would be best suited to your needs.
http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/quaife-02j-atb-helical-limited-slip-diff-lsd.html
It will help lay the power down earlier coming out of a corner instead of just spinning up and understeering.

Top Bloke! Thanks for that, so tweaking the shopping list a little looks like I'd spend roughly 1500to2000 in getting it there so overall not bad considering. Best get saving!

Think an LSD gearbox will cost around £1200 for the diff, bolts and bearing second hand gearbox and install.

Really better get saving! Cheers buddy

out of interest, if i were to source a anni gearbox then would that make any difference? wouldnt mind the 6th gear for cruising

From what I recall the 6 speed as used in the anniversary are shorter ratio, even shorter than those used in the later 02j fitted to 1.8t and that the 5th gear on most 02j are about as tall as the 6th on the 02m. If you do go for an 02m be sure you order the right diff.
You could swap out some gears during the build for ratios that better suit your driving style.
-
too technical for my liking just yet lol will keep that in mind though
-
6 speed would require many more parts also, new clutch, flywheel, starter motor, driveshafts, salve cylinder, hydraulic lines, all sorts.
I'd suggest that getting a mk4 from 150-300bhp is likely to cost you a lot more than £2000 to do it properly.
The diff install alone will be around £1000+, then the same again for forged rods if you actually expect it to last any time at all. Another £1k on the turbo, actuator, turbo intake pipe to suit, and required manifold porting. And you're at £3k already before you've bought a downpipe, cat back exhaust system, MAF, injectors, FMIC, or most importantly a decent custom map! Not to mention a decent clutch and flywheel required to hold it all together.
I'm nto saying for one minute don't do it, a 300bhp mk4 is great fun, especially if it handles well already. Just be aware of teh true costs to get to where you want to be. at £200 per month it'll take you almost 2 years saving to do it all!

just some food for thought (baring in mind that i already have some stuff done to my car so you may need other bits) but this is what iv been offered...
brand new turbo & actuator (k03 with audi tt internals)
bigger injectors
vr6 maf
new supersized tip
Map
should see me to 280ish bhp (however im proberbly going to take it to 250 bhp untill i get rods then up it further)
total cost is around £1200 ish
as i say i already have mods done so this should be all i require. only thing thats liable to go would be clutch and rods, which as i said ill dial down the power untill i get forged rods and the clutch, well if that goes so be it ill replace it when it starts to go...
