Title: 1.6 8v Sr engine (akl) Any one else had sticky rings?
Post by: Rmachines on 27 April 2014, 23:47
I have got my self a mk4 golf with the akl 1.6 Sr engine,   it drives spot on,  but went to mot it for it fail all 3 emission tests,  I thought it was overfueling big time but now it's smoking when hot all 4 plugs are coked and started to go lumpy...  And a LOT of smoke! So looks like it's burning oil,   I have the inlet manifold off which is lined in oil,  and no signs of oil on the top of the valves over night so I don't think it's the stem seals, So the oil control rings are suspect,  is this common on the akl engine?   The engine has been over fueling for a while by the looks of it due to a faulty thermostat and temp sensor,  as well as short trips,  then being left for a few months Unused...    I'm in the process of trying to free the rings by pouring octain booster,  brake cleaner and ATF in the bores and rocking the engine/ cranking.. (worth a try?)   I only paid £200 for the car,  but having spent a lot on it including a new cat and suspenssion/brakes I would like to revive it.    I'm a mechanic so labour is no problem.    I'm just curious if any one else has had this problem.

Also,  on diagnostics,  it's constantly reading "rich"  and throwing  a code for lambda lower limit exceeded so whether this is still overfueling,  or Because of the oil content I'm not sure...     Any one else had a similar problem?
