Hi, So today my mk3 Golf GTI 2.0 ADY failed its MOT on emissions - if only i had booked it at the start of the month rather than a day or due before its run out.
My mechanic said give it a good service, only problem is its just had oil and filter, leads, cap and rotor arm so then said try not new catalytic converter and lambda probe. Before spending £100 on parts from ECP followed by a morning on my back trying to fit the damn thing anything worth testing/trying?
I've seen the ECT sensor test so will give that a try.
Also worth noting shes always seemed quite thirsty but put that down to short journeys, runs a little lumpy on tickover but goes pretty nicely for its mere 115 ponies, never had any starting issues.
Thanks
Adam

Could be a lambda
-
So if the ECT sensor aint the issue just bite the bullet and go for cat/lambda.
-
I dont want to advise that. Check wires etc first.
-
any fault codes??
in any case lambda before replacing cat... but get something decent, not the cheap as chips ones off ebay
-
I have a handheld scanner but it doesnt seem to read anything from my mk3, reads the TT, my old leon cupra r and families cars fine though.
Been looking at replacements and everythings fairly similarly priced other than VW's own £415 cat, was most likely going to get a React cat and Bosch sensor from ECP.
By the time its up on ramps and with the probe probably welded in place its probably a safer bet to do all in one job but fingers crossed its the cheaper ECT sensor option.
-
I do an NGK lambda for £60 or bosch for £65 (both direct fit so no chopping wires like some!)
and my cats are £58 by BM Catalysts or a similar respected brand (not like the non type approved one's sold by euro)

Ive got a decent cat and lambda sensor from a 16v you can have for a tenner a piece if they're compatible mate?
-
Give it a good long run and then take it for emissions or get them to pass emissions test using another car.
-
16v parts are not compatable, oh and GOLF-MK3-GTI do you use the same mot place i do? :lipsrsealed:

Shocking!
See if you can get the codes read, but sounds like a lambda issue
-
The 16v cat will fit the 8v
-
The 16v cat will fit the 8v
yeah same part by bm catalysts for 8 & 16v

The 16v cat will fit the 8v
I thought so.

take it for a "hot run/thrash" before you go for the mot and get them to test the emissions straight away, i had to do this with my mk3 and the cats were pretty much glowing  but it worked  although it may have had something to do with the fact i had 2 cats :lipsrsealed:

So i tested the ECT sensor this evening - values seemed pretty normal and followed the table roughly thats in the maintenance section even though i didnt know exact temperature. Ran ridiculously rich and stench of fuel was terrible when the sensor was disconnected so im pretty certain its not running that rich when everythings connected normally.
Lambda and Cat tomorrow then  Thanks for the parts offerguys but need it done tomorrow so its going to be ECP just need to work out which damn one it is as there are multiple Bosch lambda listings and 2 choices of cats.
Cheers

Don't use the ecp in hannibal way Wallington.....
If you can take it all off the car and go down with it, you should come back with the right bits as you can check your self, also helps with the 'its not the right part' argument.
Wallington is ok if you get the Zim, he knows his vw.
How far from Sutton are you?

Now that was a long job. Started early saturday so i could check i had the right parts before all the shops closed. As the longlife systems only been on a year i had the parts off the car in about 45m-1hour just took a while working out where the lambda end connection was as it looped around so i was looking at the right connector the whole time i thought i wasnt.
Then went to buy/collect parts and wasted about 4 hours calling everywhere trying to get a lambda. Next time i need to remember to check ECP stock after you get past click and collect stage. Rueben at Tuningwerkes luckily came through although it was about £20 more than ECP but i cant really complain to get the job done on the day.
All went back together ok but after refitting i found there was a small leak where cat joins the mid pipe so i then had to disassemble again to add some slots in the mid pipe to allow it to close up more, not easy handling a hack saw with a few inches of movement.
Feels like an entire day wasted but at least its now done. Ready for a retest!

For anyone not bored of the thread yet and interested in the result, she passed today  so the combination of the lambda and cat reduced the CO2 to below the threshold it was at 0.6 with the limit 0.3 and safely made it to 0.13.
Of course it couldn't be all good she needs new rear discs
