Title: New to forum - 7 days since owning Golf MK6 GTI
Post by: GTIoxford on 23 April 2014, 12:00
Hi guys,

I am a rookie on this site and I have only just registered today. Wondered if I could get some advice!

Last week I bought a Carbon Steel Grey, Golf MK6 GTI DSG [Leather, Sat Nav, ACC, Park Assist, Parking aid etc etc..] from VW Huddersfield, 43k miles..

Having driven it down to where I live (Oxford), I have had so much fun.. Since Tuesday morning [advice needed]. All the checks / diagnostics were done before VW Huddersfield sold me the car.

Having started the car on Tuesday morning, as usual I gave it a couple of minutes to warm up a little. Half a mile down the road I then get a sudden loss of power.. Engine light comes on, at which point I pull over and turn off the car. I then try to re-start and there is a horrible smell and noise..

I call VW assistance, one of their guys come out.. and long story cut short, it had to be towed to a local VW dealer as the 'injectors' had failed. Is this a common problem? I then get a 2 day car hire for free (and asked for a £150 deposit - **which will only get refunded if the car is returned with a full tank of fuel >fair enough<, but it takes around 15 working days to come back into my account.. brilliant *sigh*).

Told this morning the car won't be fixed until next week due to getting the right parts in.

My questions:

1) I've lost a weeks use of my new car, and a lot of hassle with it.. Would it be cheeky to ask for a 'problem sweetener'?

2) If the injectors failed, am I right in thinking that the oil could have been contaminated? Read somewhere about this.. If so, I shall need to check that the oil and filters have been changed?

Thoughts welcome!

Thanks,

GTIOxford

Hello there,You got it from a VW main dealer,if I were you I would make use of their 30 day no quibble guarantee and hand the car back. You don't get a refund but they will swap it for another car with the same value,I suppose your dealer may not have the same spec car but they can check other dealers stock.Oh and I think you can't have driven more than 1000 miles in it to hand it back.

have they taken your car to VW on Iffley Road in Oxford, worth asking what the car arrangements are as I had an issue with my scirocco which got towed there and parts were on a lead time and i still had a courtesy vehicle

despite living in Oxford I always use the dealer in Wantage as service is a lot better

Thanks both.

I doubt I would want to return the car (200 odd miles) and I love the GTI (waited two months for one with this spec).

The car is in Wantage VW currently. I have just been offered one of their own courtesy cars so I'll be taking that offer up later on today. Always a good service from them.

Suppose I'd rather all the problems come and go within the 12 month warranty period

I'm sure as its under warranty the garage will happily string out some 'belt and braces' repairs for you.

Tell them you want all the injectors changing, not just damaged ones (might do this anyway) , change the oil and filter.

If injectors are failing does the fuel system need to be checked? High pressure fuel pump?

Thanks Hobojim.

I've just emailed the service advisor and requested the technicians word on oil/filter changes, pressure pump and more.

Fingers crossed that will all be done!

Hi,

If the car had a defect that the pre sales inspection should reasonably have identified, the warranty company might expect the selling dealership to stand the cost of repairs, particularly within the first month/ first 1000 miles of ownership because the Das Welt warranty company expects that dealerships will undertake "robust" pre sales inspections.

Regardless, none of the issues you list are for you to pay for.  That's why you paid a premium for a Das Welt approved used VW.  If it was me, I would put my concerns in writing to the selling DP, the selling Sales Manager and the selling dealership's Service Manager to ensure that all of your bases are covered from the earliest possible time.

Even if you think "if something later fails, it will be covered under warranty", if you can actually articulate/ document the concerns now and they say "that's nothing to worry about, everything's fine" and then said concern becomes a reality within your warranty period and/ or otherwise within a reasonable period of time, you can then produce your documentation and they will not be in a defendable position should they expect you to pay for anything related.  For example should someone later say that the warranty does not cover the issue.

To be asked to pay £150 etc up front as a security/ potential excess bond "just in case" is not something I've ever been asked to do with any dealership and if they're prepared to treat you like that 1 week into your ownership experience of a sizeable issue and inconvenience to you, how might they treat you "after a reasonable period of wear and tear use sir" (although is this a request from a dealership not affiliated to your selling dealership)?

I would be polite but clear and more formal with them (the selling dealership) on all issues that you have, both real and realistic potential issues.  This would mean emailed concerns from me and me requesting emailed direct responses from them within 2 working days, for example, so that I could have a clear audit trail.

Regardless of their exchange policies, in the UK you are protected by the Sale of Goods Act which states that the car (used or otherwise) should be fit for purpose and free of minor defect within the first 6 months.  You say you don't want to do so but you should always keep in mind that *you can* take steps to reject the car and seek a refund if they do not competently repair the car making it fit for purpose with minimum inconvenience to you and within a reasonable period of time.

Your experience to date, particularly the unsavoury £150 etc request would undermine my trust and confidence in the "customer focus" of the selling dealership, if the selling dealership had a hand in the £150 request.

Your car sounds very nice and hopefully this is all just a mechanical blip and/ or a communication breakdown/ different policies between dealerships.

Having bought a 2010MY GTi from Lookers VW within the last month, the car has had some major remedial work done and is actually going back in for some minor re-work this week but nothing has been too much trouble for them to date and they have offered a courtesy car each time with free insurance and with no "insurance excess money up front" requests; and to be honest, I would expect nothing less having committed a lot of money to the purchase.

All the best with it all.

Thank you all, especially Pld118 for your detailed response - some great advice there.

8 days on... Still no car. So much for their "48 hour" around.

I'll give you the load down.. Car went into VW Wantage last Tuesday > Parts came in LAST Thursday morning > VW Wantage couldn't process warranty until diagnostics check list want sent through from VW Huddersfield (done before they sold me the car) > This took until Monday to come through morning after rounds of chasing for it (turns out it was sent straight away but it VW Wantage has a dodgy fax machine) > Hoping that work could start yesterday (Tuesday, 7 days on), turns out more docs are needed to process warranty claim > its now WEDNESDAY, 4PM (8 days on) and no work has started?!?!?

Probably be Friday (10 days) until I get my car back. Outraged. I've asked for some compensation for it taking a week (maybe even more!) to sort this problem out.

What should I aim to get? I.e. Extra servicing etc..

Thoughts please.

Thanks guys. P.s. I'm returning the courtesy car on empty.

I havent read every one of the above comments so this might have been mentioned.. but am guessing you got a 1 year warrenty with the car as its from approved used vw? Dont be afraid to get your point across at how unhappy you are ( or should be) okay yerh you have the car you have been after for ages but dont tell them that. Make the point to them that your disgusted! like one of the comments said you could quite easily send the car back as its still within that time frame..but obviously gti's on a whole are rather rare and at a certain spec even more rare.. Its ridiculous that a car you have just bought has a fault. obviously one of there 10394095x checks wasn't carried out as "thoroughly" as it should have been. I would try and force the point for a extra warrenty. a warrenty to kick in when yours runs out. family member of mine got it with audi. exact same problem bought used and within a week something went wrong. the dealer give a warrenty for after the year was up for a following 6 months.. I would try push for that to give you some extra peice of mind and it is a couple hundred quid for a warrenty too remember!!. However don't take there word of mouth.. make sure its all in writing that the garage once yours is up will add a further Warrenty..If the garage doesnt budge on much of a sweeter to help you out. Say you want to speak to someone higher such as director.. or go to volksagon uk.  I have had issues with vw dealer and a simple phone call to Volkswagen uk did the job.   best of luck buddy!

hope this helps mate and hope your car gets sorted and back up and running!

Hi chris1h,

Yes its under warranty. Some sound advice there, which I will have in mind!

Latest update: Still no car, the garage said they are working on it today. I am expecting a call from the sales manager to discuss a 'gesture of good will' for my troubles.

Thanks

Picked up the car today, 10 days on.

Service advisor said that it would have cost me £900 if I didn't have the warranty.. Had a master tec on it. Also had an oil and filter due to oil contamination.

Hopefully the other guy with the same problem can get his sorted for free too!

Alright mate,

I had the same problem if you remember reading about it. I picked mine up yesterday after 4 days which wasn't too bad and I also got it all sorted for free.

I didn't get an oil and filter change so I best go and get one done to make sure. Was it just the oil filter you had changed or the fuel filter too?

Hi mate,

Good to hear! It was all the filters. I questioned why and they said that the oil could have become contaminated.
