Title: Temp and fuel gauge problems
Post by: jamiesgolf on 23 April 2014, 10:49
Hi, sorry for all the posts, having a few problems at the moment!

My fuel gauge and temperature gauge have started playing up. The fuel gauge shows about half a tank of fuel (which is probably about right) but then will go up and down a lot, and sometimes even drop to empty so the fuel light comes on, before returning to 1/2.

The temperature gauge shows around 70 degrees even after running for half an hour, and fluctuates up and down slightly while driving.

Not sure if they are related or not, any ideas what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance

The fuel gauge is probably a faulty sender in the tank.

Temperature will either be the thermostat or coolant temp sensor, does it ever get up to 90? In traffic or on idle?

cheers for your reply. It does get up to 90 sometimes yeah, sometimes it will sit at 90 as it should, but other times it won't hit 90 at all

Okay cheers. As for the fuel gauge problem, stupid question, but can I just change the sender or do you have to change the pump as well?

Thanks for your gelp

And I would say thermostat for the other problem

Ok cheers, any idea whether the sender from a 1.6 will be the same? I live in guernsey so access to parts isn't easy!

I changed the sender today, and I've still got the fuel gauge problem. When I had the sender out, I moved the float up and down slowly with the connector plugged in. The fuel gauge moved from empty to full as it should, but then I put it back in the tank and I still had the problem. At this point I swapped it for a replacement, but the problem still persists. Any ideas what else it might be?

Also noticed that it happens when I go round a corner?
