Title: DSG gearbox noises
Post by: Prior7 on 19 April 2014, 22:24
Alright guys,

Got my mk6 GTI about 2 weeks and last week it started making a slight knocking noise when pulling away. As soon as it changes up to second or you are moving the noise stops. Was wondering if anybody had a clue what it is?

Something else it's started to do today is when I put it into drive it quickly switches between auto and manual as if it's confused as to what's being asked of it. It doesn't do it when I go from sport but only when I go from park, reverse or neutral. Again was hoping somebody would be able to enlighten me as to what could be happening?

Thanks for any replies in advance :)

My advice would be take it back to the garage and get them to sort when was the gearbox last serviced did you get it from a vw garage and did it come with warranty hope you get it sorted

The car was serviced by the garage I bought it from before I picked it up. I didn't get it from a VW garage but I'll have to take it back to where I bought it to see what they say

Doesn't sound right.

What do mean it switches between auto and manual?   By itself?  Are you using the paddles at all when in drive mode, as this will override drive and put it into manual.

I select drive (auto) and it switches between drive manual and then back to drive auto by itself and then stays in auto. You can hear the engine change it's tone like it would when you select manual yourself. I used the panels before it happened but I rarely use them.

Weird.  I assume you aren't accidentally knocking the gear lever over to the left (manual) of drive when selecting.

I just wondered about the paddles because, as you probably know, if you shift with paddles in Drive, it goes into manual but if you then don't touch the paddles for a short time it reverts back to drive mode, or if you keep your finger held down on the + paddle it also puts it back into drive mode.  Just wondered if you may inadvertently have done this.

No I don't think I've been doing that, it just seems to be a little confused when I select drive which is quite strange. I'll see what the garage say and hopefully let yous know so yous know what it is. Thanks for the advice.

My previous mk5 gti dsg would very occasionally refuse to shift up in Drive (usually after being in manual).  It seemed to think it was still in manual.  I never bothered getting it checked as it only happened a few times and knocking the lever to M and then back to D sorted it.  Never happened on the mk6.

Hope the garage get it sorted for you.

Just a quick update about the car.

I've driven it for a couple of days now and it hasn't changed it's mind about being in manual and auto since I posted the issue which I thought was a bit strange haha

However, there is still a slight knocking noise when I pull away as if something is moving in a mount or drove shaft moving slightly or something like that. Was wondering if anybody has had any similar issues?
