Title: Front pad change
Post by: darrent on 17 April 2014, 09:13
The car is getting a service and brake fluid change, on the MOT front pads were advised as being low.I got a quote from the dealer of £139 to fit new pads. Is that really the going rate?
I thought it would be cheaper especially as I assume, maybe wrongly, the wheels would be off for the fluid change anyway.

Is that a VW dealer? I bet they make decent money on MOT recommendations, some of them are £100 + per hour labour rate.

It's not a difficult job but you could try an Indy instead.

Rip off, do it yourself its dead easy. Or just tell them what you are prepared to pay the worst they can say is no and you do it yourself anyway.

It wasn't a dealer who did the MOT. Looks like I'll have to cough up then cos I cant be arsed to do them myself, but I am tight

That's actually not a bad price i think at work we charge about £180 for pad replacement,When carrying out a brake fluid on VAG cars there is a brake bleed bottle we use so we keep the wheels on but i usually take the rear off as it can be tight and messy,A cheaper way if you wanted a dealer to do it is to buy the parts from EuroCar Parts and just pay VW for labour :)

If you didn't realise it is only £50 labour charge for a oil change the rest is parts premium,if you got the parts from Euro and pairs for labour with VW you could easily get a oil change service and stamped book for £70-£90 :)

Carparts4less are cheaper and i think are part of eurocarparts anyway. Check out both web sites they are quite alike. Top tip for carparts4less is to make yourself an account and type in your browser for a voucher. Think its SAVE5 which equates to 5%. Take your parts to the checkout, basket and exit. DON'T BUY THEM. The guys over at carparts4less will be looking at your stuff in your basket and thinking is this bugger going to buy....still wait...by day 4 you will get an email saying are you wanting them! ignore it. Another 2 days and they'll offer an extra 10%...bonus

I bought a set of APEC pads from my local motor factors which cost £22 and fitted myself. (2009 2.0 GT TDI 140)  £100+ pounds seems steep to me particularly as APEC pads do feel pritty good, just have to see haow long they last!

Well I got the car serviced and the dealer reported that the pads are 50% worn so another year I think before they need doing. Thanks for the replies
