Title: Front Badge removal
Post by: Tornado8 on 16 April 2014, 20:12
Just a quick question. How do you remove the metal VW without damaging the mount? I want to paint it black; also what is the best way?

It looks like this when it's off so you can get an idea of where the clips are

My advice would be to take off the grill so you can get it indoors and in a comfortable position to gently prise it off, you need a few very flat small screwdrivers to do this successfully!

You have to be careful as the rear of the clips is usually melted to prevent them being easily stolen. If you want to paint it matt black, the easiest and most effetive way is to use a paint called Plasti Dip. Not cheap but covers well and you can paint the badges in place, mask around them, any overspray is easily removed as it just rubs off. Read instructions carefully follow them. Vids on youtube and various other info on web.

I plasti dipped mine but still took it off, the glossy black area is a separate part so looks neat when it's reassembled.

Just as another option (and often cheaper than a can of Plastidip) you can buy black/red/carbon badges on Ebay but I'm not sure if the Mk7 is exactly the same badge as the Mk6? - I'm sure someone can confirm.

Or pre-cut vinyl inserts offer some alternatives too...

MK6/7 are completely different unfortunately (Mk6 is closer to Mk5) so self-painting is the only option right now!

As for the inserts, they may be the same size, nobody has reported they fit yet though.
