I've got a 2010 gti with 44k on the clock. I'm thinking of trading up for a mk7 gti. I've never traded a car in my life, I always bought them outright in cash!
Am I better off selling mine privately or taking it to VW with a view to trading it in?

Same here, but as buy in cash I am therefore very wary of the price difference between trade & private. I know selling privately has associated costs such as advertising and also includes 'tyre-kickers' but I've always persevered and so far no issues.
However, you can always negotiate with VW as you're also buying a new car. Depends how desperate you are for the new one, I guess !
Had my GiT from new since Aug 10 but always said to myself that I'd wait until Mk8 GiT is out. Cannot justify new car every model upgrade etc etc

Depends on whether you get the deal you're looking for on the new car. You'll probably get more selling privately but it's a bit more hassle.
I'll be ordering a mk7 R next spring, but haven't yet decided whether to trade in the mk6 or sell privately. All depends on what deal I can secure on the new car.
Have always previously traded-in and paid remainder in cash and will be paying cash this time. Will approach dealers with a target figure for the R in mind, so all depends if they can reach or come close enough to that. Greater discount will undoubtedly mean lower trade-in price and vice versa but if it comes in on target, whichever way, will probably go for it. If not then may look to sell privately.

I popped into local dealer at weekend to take a look at their red R in the showroom. Its on Autotrader the only red R on there.I must admit going weak at the knees. If pushed by the salesman I swear I would have given in.I must hold out till next year also.
-
I had a look recently...and although the Mk7 GTIPP or R is a great car...I kept looking at my 13,000 mile 2010 GTI and wondering if any Mk7 is worth that + £20K.
After driving them...the answer is no...so I'll keep my GTI a bit longer.

I'm trying to avoid my dealer for that very reason lol.....though they should be getting a demo in soon so I might have to take a peek. I'll have to resist though as I want Dynaudio which has now supposedly been pushed back to bw45. Besides, I'm not done with my lovely mk6 yet.

You won't know what deal the dealer can offer until you ask. Having a nice, retailable car to px should get you a good trade in price, as the dealer knows he should be able to sell it quickly and get his money back. However, as we all know, it's the price to change that matters.
I have sold all of my cars privately recently, but then I had kept them for a long time, so they were down in the £3-4000 price range. Buying outright will get you the best discount off the new car from the dealer, but cash is not always best. They like to sell you finance to boost their commission. You could always play along, getting a better deal due to having finance, but then change your mind and hand over your debit card on the day of collection.
We have had the Mk6 for just over 3 years now and I have considered that it could be time for a change, however I'd like to think that it is in exceptional condition and only done 33,000 miles. To me it's too good a car to let someone else have just yet.

I have seen the R your on about I think if I where to go new next time it would be a red R I can always dream

Same for me except i have not driven the R.
-
I did consider it in Sept last year and thank goodness I didn't. Cost of change too high, now being made redundant so, I am glad as I have the spare money as a bumper.
-
My GTI is running so sweet at the moment, really loosened up after 45k miles.
I have had two test drives in MK7s, a standard GTI and a PP but nothing made we want to spend £10k+ to change so I am hanging on until next year.
Probably looking more towards an R or something mad.
You have to have at least one bonkers car in your life and I haven't managed one yet, RS6 anyone
-
i did and have no regrets swapping the 35 for a 7R

I have mine booked in for its first mods a week on Friday (it's 5 years old in July). I am also test driving a low mileage Mk6 R in the morning just to make sure I have scratched that itch before I mod the Gti. I'''m absolutely convinced I won't be tempted by the R as it's the best part of probably £12k cost to change and it just isn't worth it. It's also nearly the price of a Mk7 Gti and I've seen a nearly new M135 for £25k in recent weeks.
I just thought I'd better drive it first before I mod just to make sure.................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm changing up from a MK6 GTI to a MK7 'R'.
No trade in, just VT on my MK6 and starting afresh on the 'R'.
So far I've managed to get the dealer to knock off over £3400. You need to hit them with carwow/drivethedeal quotes and they collapse

That'll be my strategy next year, and will be hoping to secure a similar amount of discount.

I tried and failed. Booked a test drive in a mk7 dsg at Southend VW, turned up on the day to be met by the salesman who told me his manager had driven off in the demonstrator 20 minutes earlier on domestic business.
"when will he be back?" - "dunno"
"phone him and find out" - "can't disturb him on private business"
"why didn't you contact me and save me a wasted journey?" - 'shrug'
"why did he have to take that car" - "he didn't know it was booked"
And all the time in the background a promotional video was playing on their wide screen for the mk6 GTI.

When dropping off our "new" MK6 at the dealership for some remedial work last week, it was parked next to a MK7 GTi. They both looked really good and taking into account the cost difference/ the deal we got, I felt pretty well chuffed with ours and did not for one minute feel like the poor relation.
I've never PX'd a car and always sell privately. An immaculate and properly service/maintained, desirable type of car will sell quickly via Autotrader/ elsewhere within a few weeks if priced and advertised well/ correctly, whether that is £2k or £20k, fact.
Dealers definitely want to sell you a car on Finance as opposed to just taking your cash because with said GTi, despite getting an excellent deal "for cash", right til the death they pushed me hard to take Finance which they said would get me a further £500 reduction plus 2 years free servicing... And they said I could pay the Financed amount off within 3 months, interest free and without penalty if I wanted.
Sceptical that you get now for nowt and that it was another admin process/ incumbrance that I did not want or need, I paid cash and "lost out" on a £500 reduction and 2 "free" services.
-
I took out a small amount of finance to get 2 free services on both mine and my wife's mk6 with the intention of paying off straight away.
But the experience of trying to get through to VW Finance on both occasions to pay up early was so horrendous and traumatizing (deliberate on there part I feel) that I would almost choose to do without the free services next time.

I took the lowest I could out on my pre reg with 6 miles on the clock got the free servicing and paid it of at a later date not incurring any charges and I already had a servicing plan from my previous mk 6 gti so ended up with 5 years servicing 2 being free and 3 at a reduced price it suited me to do it that way

I had a quick sit inside this MK7 R at the weekend, but with the spec I want it would be nearly £38K. I'm more than happy with my 35 and it looked really good parked next to the R, not out of place or dated. More customers were looking towards my car than the R when they walked past. IMO it needs 19s fitted.
Thought you R junkies may like these...

I reflected I was being too principled Mustard. You've made me feel better now

£38k wow. Now I'm really pleased with my little deal. That's the point I was trying to make, IMO at least, when our MK6 was parked next to the equivalent MK7 it didn't look dated at all and was as much if not more of a head turning car than the newer model. Opinions vary and people should spend/enjoy their money - legally - as they see fit.

Nice pics of the R but it definitely needs the 19s (and to be black ). Overall, I still think mk6s look better than mk7s, particularly the gti.
Your spec price is same as mine which is why I need discount to be nudging 10%, and will probably have to factor in next year's April price increase too!

R is FTW!!!

Well, I test drove the Mk6 R this morning and really liked it. Only 6500 miles so it felt brand new. But at £25k on a March 12 plate I felt it was still way too expensive to justify a £14k or so cost to change.
For that £25k I could be looking at a new Mk7 GTi but I reckon I'm going to wait another or so and look at the Edition 40 or a nearly new Mk7 R.
They had all three Mk7s in the car park by the way (GTi, GTD and R) and I though the GTi in black was the nicest of the three. The R was too subtle and didn't remotely look like the £38k car the salesman said it was. And I also seem to remember having the discussion on here about price when the Mk6 came out but £38k for a Golf is just too much. Completely unjustifiable.
I've set myself a limit of £25k next year and intend to stick to it. No Golf is worth more than that in my opinion, especially when you can pick up 135s starting at that price.

a lot of money for a 12 plate I agree but I have seen 40000 milers for over 20 grand so they must be holding there value

What dictates the values of nearly new cars tho'? The dealers? Price them too low and they'll not be able to sell new cars on the pretense that they'll hold their money.
It would be interesting to know what that 12 plate .:R was written back too. Not much above £20k would be my guess.

Done.
Ordered my R today.
Lapiz blue, three door DSG.
Keyless entry and high beam assist
-
Part company with my March 12 Golf GTI ED 35 early June for Mk7 R.
It would have been Rude not to
-
Hi all
I have on order a new mk7 5door pure white, and expecting delivery early June.
Got a very good deal trading in my immaculate 10 reg 27000 mile red GTi.
Got top book price and £1000 off list price.
Selling privately would involve test drives, possibly being without a car for some time or not selling current car before arrival of the new one.
Also worry of large sum of cash involved in a transaction with a stranger.
