Title: Mk7 GTI Colours
Post by: Tsmart0203 on 12 April 2014, 23:00
Firstly, hi all. I am new to this forum and with thanks to all the knowledgable and passionate members on here, soon to be the owner of a brand new GTI! My first VW, and first car with any 'real performance'. The car it is replacing is a 1.4l Fiat Punto with c.70bhp, so to say I'm excited is a bit of an understatement!

Car on order is a 5dr Manual GTI, Carbon Grey with Keyless, Rear Camera and Park Assist. I wanted to keep it light on the options, but arguably no matter what options you choose, the most difficult/important one (for me at least) is the colour!

White looks great, and I always assumed it would be my first choice, however every GTI i have seen on the road has been white (bar the carbon grey i test drove) and it is replacing a white car, so i fancied a change. Carbon Grey looks great and is unique to the GTI/D, but now the order has been placed I'm deliberating whether or not I've made the right choice!

Im sure this is a natural reaction to being 1 week into the c.12 week lead time and i'll soon calm down, however i thought i'd share with others a reference point that I found useful when deciding on colours.... Pintrest is a great way to collate images, so I pulled together some 'real-life' shots from the net of different coloured GTI's for easy comparison. Please see link below, which will hopefully be of use to others who can't make up their minds!

I'm seriously considering changing the order to Limestone Grey, however I'm sure it'll change again in a week or two.....

Cheers,
Tom

I love my CSG - it's the perfect "stealth" colour and suits the GTi perfectly. When it's clean you get tinges of blue and green in the dark silver grey. It contrasts beautifully with the red stripes and the black grille, side-skirts and rear diffuser ..... :D

Limestone is nice - but much paler and not quite as distinctive IMHO  .... :)

My dad has a limestone mk7 estate turning up soon and I'm sure when they are side by side I'd wish I'd have gone for something a little more distinctive!

You see, I have changed my mind again already....This is going to be a long 12 weeks!

I personally really dislike the limestone grey. For me my first choice is white (obviously) but understandably i can see why you wouldn't want white. My other choices would be carbon grey, red and reflex silver. I think if my partner didn't dislike silver cars so much i may have gone for that. I think it really brings out the MK7 lines. Love my pure white though, still my first choice

I'm just hoping Grey is a little more forgiving with the dirt....White is hard to keep clean but looks amazing when it is

Everyone says that but it's really not that bad. Just make sure you use a good quality sealant and wax every 6 months and the dirt literally falls off. Makes washing so easy!

Mine hasn't been cleaned in over 300 miles and 2 weeks. Still looks good and pretty clean really. The wax stops road tar from sticking so easily too.

My wife and bro both have tungsten silver and they are great for not showing up the dirt.

I've got LSG and it has an amazing gold/bronze tinge to it that really pops in the sun.  Because of the sharp lines on the 7 it makes for an amazing effect.

Also, it either hides the dirt really well or my car has some sort of magical dirt barrier :)

With a decent sealant on the paint you can just pop into a jet wash and stick £1 in the machine and rinse off anything it's picked up.  I find I usually do this mid-week to keep it looking clean (Sat/Sun is wash day).

Limestone grey is definitely a nice colour and not one that is seen very often so you'd have the unique feel to it but the GTI/D exclusivity of Carbon Steel Grey makes it a better choice IMO.

Plus it's one of those colours that surprises you in different lights.  People think it's black, grey, green, blue..

Went with Deep Black Pearl in the end.

Was tempted by CSG just because it was exclusive to the GTI / GTD but unless it was bright sunshine then I thought it still looked dirty...
