Title: Edition 35 to be changed for M135i......
Post by: platinum70 on 12 April 2014, 12:12
Just in the process of negotiating a deal for a BMW M135i. Drove the auto version yesterday and was very impressed. Didn't seem like a single clutch auto. Very responsive and very quick changes. Driving position superb and cabin very nice. Stark contrast to the previous generation 1 series.

I don't like the look as much but fancy a change again. Not prepared to pay a premium for the new R. Hope its not a decision I end up regretting as the Ed 35 puts a smile on my face every day.

If anyone is interested in mine I will be putting it in the classifieds and also on Auto trader.

I went the other way so each to their own i suppose.

I'm parting with my perfectly brilliant ED 35 about to be chopped in for the Mk 7 R. Expected June

Sorry i dont know the BM well enough but wasnt on my horizon as a possibility. It was either an R or back to Audi....

I haven't driven the R socsnnot compare but the BM was a nicer cabin, slightly better drive and just felt more planted and solid. Standard power is immense and the gearbox superb. Have you driven the R? I assume so...

Yip took a DSG for a whizz round some country roads and it was a done deal.

Best of luck with the BM

Was there much about it you preferred? I have dsg and a few other 'tweaks' so power not the issue for me. But 4wd appeals...

My head was saying stay with the ED35. It is an exceptional high spec ED35 and while i still own it, one of the best cars i have ever owned straight out a garage. Better in many ways than my previous Audis and silly daft fast cars.

However i was curious about the R, i wouldnt have chopped in the ED35 for a Mk7 GTI, the change just isnt enough. I took the R for a test drive and just knew after about 1/2 hour test drive that i would let the ED35 go. The R is a totally different car to the Mk6 and i guess it is quite a different car over the Mk7 GTI.

Power, handling, response and of course VW quality as a package it had to be.

I dont really know the BM as ive said but assume its direct competition in this market. Im just not a fan but as i said each to their own....

I nearly pulled the trigger on an M135i before i bought my ED35 in november last year. I just couldn't live with the fuglyness of it or the real lack of space in the back and boot etc. BMW were doing some stupid deals which had me concerned about depreciation too. With stage 1 the ed35 isnt far off the 135 but it does struggle to get the power down. For the 6k differential at the time the Golf had more appeal. The mk7 r even more so because you still get the practicality of the golf that the 1 series just cant get close to imho.

I'm not keen on the looks of the 135 but the cabin, driving position and overall 'feel' were superior. I took to it immediately. My only issue with the Ed 35 is getting the power down (as ttdan said BC above). I'm not convinced its the right move but time will tell I guess. Not put pen to paper yet so could still change my mind!

I had similar thoughts of changing my Mk6 GTI DSG for an M135i, but found the looks from the front a little too challenging.

So because I don't need a hatchback, went for an M235i 8sp auto. It's a torque converter gearbox but feels so much like a twin clutch in use, it fools some people - including the salesman from Fairfield BMW who accompanied me on a test drive.

I ordered in the end from a sponsor on the 'babybmw' forum who is doing 18% discount deals on the M135i and 10% on the 235.

Hence my point about depreciation...thats Coopers Tunbridge Wells btw. 135 is a cracking car, fantastic two seater  manual version all the way if you can live with the space and looks.

All recent reviews and tests put the R above the beemer?

Haven't seen recent test reviews but the BM I can get within car allowance budget. The R not so....

I don't think you can go wrong with either car. Good to see the 7R is getting positive reviews, like some others have said it's the looks of the 1 series that are a bit of a let down but the rest of the car is top drawer apparently.

And that inline 6 sound? Better than the blander sounding 4 pot.

I've just gone down the similar thoughts I was planning to keep the 35, I've loved the last 2 1/2 years with my 35 and was curious about the 7R.

Drove it and that was it for me should be here late July. Can't wait!

Boxxer you've had the same experience as me. I have a perfectly good and brilliant ED35 but I too was curious about the R and test drove it, next thing the ED35 is going and hello R in June

I really saw my self keeping the 35 but I was really impressed with the R.

Few months to wait yet though!

Perhaps I need to drive the R but none near me. Is it really that much better/different? What are the key plus points/pro's??

The R has so much grip compared to the 35 and the turn in feels quicker as well, you can put the car into a tight turn and get on the power no under steer it just shuffles the power and off it go's!

The car I took out had the adaptive chassis control with the 19s and the ride even in Race was more comfortable than my 35.

I'd say it feels more focused but you can pop it in comfort and it's like a normal car if you like that sort of thing.

It's worth a drive for sure but it might cost you ;-)

Can certainly get the BM cheaper. But I may have to check this out. Not sorted the deal out yet as the one I wanted ended up being too pricey

I loved the idea of the BMW, 6 pot turbo soundtrack and good discounts available but my mrs isn't keen on rwd.

The R is all weather fun, with the crappy weather we have in the uk!

has the R more grip, in 3,500 miles i have only managed to get the esp to kick in twice and that was due to suspension being to stiff imho as was in race mode so car needed a bit more roll, my 35 could easily light that button especially out of slow speed corners

I thought BMW were bringing a M135i xDrive version to the uk?
4wd should sort the rwd issues some have with the M135i
