Title: VIC Check - no v5
Post by: MoMartin on 11 April 2014, 00:30
So, i've just bought a 2000 plate Golf GTI, and stupidly, i didn't do a hpi check. Turns out that the car was a Category C Write off, and now that i have applied for a new V5C I have instead received a letter regarding a Vehicle Identification Check. The car currently has a few modifications, but i'm not too sure if it will effect the actual VIC, so i'd like someone on here to enlighten me on the situation if possible.

The modifications of this car are - Lowered, debadged and it has an aftermarket intercooler on it.(quite big, guy had to cut part of the front bumper off to work it in)

Will these modifications cause the car to fail the inspection, as they arent stock?

Cheers, Mo

Before you go through the hassle of a Vic check have you made sure that your insurance company will insure the car? Sometimes they won't.

I'd be tempted to cut your losses and break the car for parts.

I'm going to find out a bit more info about the car today  in the sense of how it was written off, and contact the guy I bought it off to try and get some of my money back.
Also, does anyone know if it being lowered / having an intercooler will effect the check?

no it will not, its just like an MOT but they also check that the engine is the correct engine and that all the id numbers match up iirc.

so aslong as your car is in drivable state to pass an MOT then it should be ok....

It was re-motted in march, and ive made the engine run a whole lot nicer now, so its just down to the chassis really, which i've had a look at, and can't see any problems with.

Took it in for the VIC test today, and it passed!

Also as far as im aware they literally only check the vin numbers, they didn't seem to check for any structural damage at all.
