Title: (Novice) When to change your GTI air-filter?

I'm just wondering if my air-filter needs changing;
What should i be looking for and how would one know when it is time to change it for another one please?

Pop of the top of the airbox and if its dirty i.e black then its time to change

Service book says something like every 20,000 miles  :undecided:

I always changed mine when I changed the oil. Its not exactly expensive......
