I've been reading a fair bit about the R and watching videos and the R just looks and sounds amazing! I picked up my GTI in October last year and it's a great car but the R just looks on another level!
Has anyone been in this position and gone ahead and sold their GTI and got an R? Somewhat tempted!
-
Saw one in the flesh today at the dealership, Lapiz blue, great colour (loved my Rising Blue Scirocco), but the GTI/GTD have a noticeably better looking front end IMO.
-
Harryhackenbacker did just that but it was what he'd planned to do from the start, i think it ended up costing him about 4-5k loss due to the deals that were available on new GTI/D's having a detremental effect on the value of his GTI, shame really cos it had a massive spec.

I went from a GTI to an R but thats another story!
-
There was one member on here who switched his GTI for an R recently but he doesn't appear to post much on this forum nowadays
Edit: Whoops forgot about Jimble

I doubt anyone is going to get more than £19-20k for a MK7 GTI in p/x towards an R, the cost of switching early - that dealer is going to want to make a £3-4k on your p/x (selling it for £23-25k) as well as whatever they make on your R they sell you.

Exactly. From a financial point of view it makes far more sense to hold onto the car for at least a couple of years to get over the usually horrendous first year depreciation. I would also expect that if you wait a while you will potentially get better discounts and a few of the options available just now may also become standard.
I also find it difficult not to cast envious eyes at the R owners but I'll wait it out 2-3 years and then see what options I have

I'm one of the few that I absolutely love the front end on the R. Just think there is something about it that is stunning in it's subtlety. Also, I think the Pret's are amazing.
As for driving, the reviews are raving about them, as are the people that own them. The AMG A45 and M135i owners have all gone very quiet about it.
Of course, I am biased as I get my R in the next few days.
-
The AMG is ludicrously priced but it's in a different performance bracket from the R

Sold my 63plate mk7 gti pp dsg. Paid £28500 for it and sold 6 months later for £23700 to an internet company. Sold in 2 days. Bought a lapis blue dsg r and fitted a tmc tuning box. I did the same with the gti. The r is in a different league in terms of power and drivability. I liked the gti but I love the r. Go for it mate you won't be disappointed.

I did like the wheels a lot on the one I saw, and if you're after that "wolf in sheeps clothing" look when you are seen in someone's rear view mirror before maneuvres, then it does that well (unless the double U lights give you away. Coming from a GTD with sh!te initial grip on even medium acceleration, the Haldex system is going to be a big plus for the R. Of course the Lapis blue screams "R" as it's an exclusive colour.

Really love the r mate, and the sound is fantastic in race mode. I much prefered my ed35 to the mk7 gti. I just think the r drives so much better than the gti and I have 19inch alloys and it is super comfy. Thought it might be a bit rough with the bigger alloys.

I had a test drive in one recently and it was mighty impressive. Any plans to tune it mate?

Im trading in a Mk6 GTI ED35 with a very high spec at just 2 years old and got a very good price for mines to switch to the R.
The ED35 still is a fantastic car to drive around while i wait but i test drove the R and its on another planet. I didnt want a Mk7 GTI as its not a big enough switch to come out of the 35
I wait in anticipation for my own R

I have already put a tmc tuning box on it mate, it's is frigging rapid now. I thought my remapped ed30 was fast but this would destroy it lol

I agree mate the ed35 is a great car, I did much preferred it to mk7 gti. The R is an amazing drive. Just out in the heavy rain and no wheel spinning when pulling away it's just amazing

what figures is it putting out with the tuning box?
-
^^^Yes, some feedback on the tuning box would be greatly appreciated - I've been waiting patiently for some on the rforum.co.uk but there has been virtually none. Does it make a really noticeable difference to the performance - from pulling off and in the mid range? Also, has your mpg dropped?

Yes mate it is great cheers. Regarding the tuning box you can feel the difference big time in mid range and on full pelt it is seriously fast. Don't do figures sorry. All I know is it is a good bit faster with the tuning box

No difference in mpg mate unless you are driving very fast. And yes big difference in power.
