Title: Oil...... STOP! - 1.8t aum
Post by: Gabriel2202 on 02 April 2014, 15:59
Recently driving the dash displayed 'oil' (showing a picture of the oil can) followed by 'STOP!' - its a 1.8t aum and i changed the oil about two weeks ago. There are no fault codes, the dash has no permanent lights and the oil level is fine also.

Any ideas what it could be? I thought it said 'low oil pressure' if that was the case but it literally just displays 'oil' and 'stop!' - could it be the level sensor?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Haha right so after my gf being adamant for the last 10 minutes that it only displays 'oil' and 'stop!', she calls back and says 'oh actually it says 'Oil Press' 'Stop Motor'

I can see this has come up in a few times and am guessing the oil pump is on it's way out, so will give a quick search of the forum.

quick question if anyone knows, would a faulty oil pump cause the engine to cut out or will it just run like a bag of spanners?

It'll either be the sensor or the oil pickup will be blocked / getting blocked

Cheers guys, have been reading up and seems a relatively straightforward job if not a little time consuming!

Its more fiddly than anything, There are some bolts on the sump that are awkward as hell on the gearbox side to get to, you'll need a wobble piece and a 10mm socket and bar and some gasket sealant as it doesn't have a gasket just don't go mad on the sealant or you'll find it in the sump next time blocking the pick up pipe.

Well those two bolts were a ball ache!

Changed the pipe and when refitting the sump the last bolt to do up fell and lodged between the flywheel and the sump so had to drop it again and re-seal! Lol

Cheers for the advice though, the pickup pipe looked slightly blocked. Sealant is drying now so will fill with oil later and hope it's sorted it.

Ahhhh same message displayed and the engine cut out twice on idle.... Any ideas? It's looking like an electrical fault for sure as my engine management fuse blew before.

Might be worth getting the oil pressure checked as the next step.

There are 2 pressure switches, one that operates below 200rpm and own that operates above, at the weekend we will do a compression test and if that's good we will change the lower pressure switch as it cuts out on idle say 1750rpm.... If that still doesn't work we can put a gauge in place of the switch and see what the pressure is like, I'll print the stuff off car data and we can have a crack, I find it hard to believe that the oil pressure goes and then is regained again... Not impossible but that's my opinion.

Then good wood Saturday :)

Looks like it, hopefully the pressures fine and it's just electrical! That being said though I hate electrical faults.
