Title: leaky rocker cover
Post by: Breaker on 02 September 2005, 13:35
hey
i just replaced my earth wire going to the rocker cover
and had to undo one bolt holding the cover on now there
is a small amount of oil leaking from the bolt

i have tightened up the bolt but it still leaks oil when the
engine is warm

You may need to replace the rocker cover gasket.

The studs have a shoulder on them ( so the gasket doesn't get crushed )
The new rubber VW gaskets come with ordinary studs without shoulders so you will need to replace the studs ( a light tap with a hammer on top of the stud normally frees them off as they often quite tight in the head )

Just done mine.  Very easy change, and the rubber gasket is now on.  Much better than the cork effort that had cracked and was leaking.  Studs also very easy to change- you can also use two nuts tightened together on the stud to remove them if the hammer method does not work.

Definitely get the VAG kit to do the work, I think it is about £14.  Well worth it.

to get the studs off i just put 2 bolts on the stud and tighten them up against each other. then twist the lower bolt off and this undoes the stud.

confused yet?

The nut method does work well but I have often found that the nuts just unwind off of the stud so the next step is the ' gentle ' tap with a hammer.

is the gasket just a rubber seal on the cover?

Yea. Once you undo the bolts which hold the cover on (8 in total) and you lift that off you will see the gasket.

Mines was leaking in the same place as you, when the engine was off a small ammount was comming out. Changed the cover and its all sorted now no more leak. I did this 3 weeks ago and only had a pain with 2 studs comming out. But the 2 bolt on thread tricked worked.

Once the metal cover is off you will see it clearly mate!
