Title: Wind deflectors
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 26 March 2014, 17:05
I'm getting the bug to start buying things before i've even got my GTD. Tempted to make wind deflectors my first buy.

They are a similar colour to the rear tints so I was thinking they would compliment the windows?!

I'm not a massive fan of the wind deflectors on the golf due to the flush fitting windows. On older cars without the flushcwindows I like them though as they sit almost flush with the door frame.

I got a pair of the climair ones when I first got my car.
They look the bee knees.
However the window operation is proper under strain.
The gloss black vertical panel on the outside of the door also gets a good old doing over.
Took mine out straight away with no regrets. They may well have bedded in given time but I'd rather have a the window function properly rather than cringe every time you open the window.

Cannot comment on the ones from vw but would have thought they are designed to fit in the same way.
Would be interested to see any comments from owners of the vw ones !!

My thoughts:

I personally think wind deflectors is a very 'JDM' thing to do...I had them on my type R and it was a very common mod and looked like it should have come out of the factory like that (as they do in Japan).

I think they don't look all that great on German cars! Sorry!

They're a bit too halfords stick-on-tat for my liking. I also think they're likely to put a lot of extra strain on the window lifting mechanism, potentially causing hassle and problems with that down the road.

I think they look good on a 3dr. Not so good on a 5dr.

Don't forget the added wind noise, who wants that?

Its each to their own, I personally like it and will be buying some. I think it'll look good with the 3 door in DBP. However, I want the darker tint WD, but no idea what tint comes with them. Il defo post pics if/when I find them

I really like them. I received my car with them on today. 3 door version and the p/s cracked when the mirror folded up. i think they might not have been fitted properly tho.

I just don't see the point of these things. If it's purely to make the car look better somehow well it fails miserably in my eyes. Ruins the lines of the car completely

Since I've seen some cars with these on recently I have to admit I'm now in the "not for me" camp.

I do think they look good but having had them on previous cars (purely for aesthetics) I can safely say that a set will not be going on the Golf as wind noise is really bad - so bad that even my GF noticed and she wouldn't notice if a wheel had come off!

I did like them but have gone off them a tad, simply because all the cars that I have seen with them has had some absolute chav/ned driving  :undecided:

I saw a set on a jetta yesterday and although originally I thought no the one on this jetta looked really good. Not sticking out at all, very sleek and looked as though they belonged. Not for me personally but these ones looked good.

When I look at the clearance between the door frame and the mirrors when folded, I do wonder how the hell the deflectors would fit without being crunched when the mirrors are folded up. There is almost no gap there to accomodate the lippage of the wind deflector.

Why anyone would want these is beyond me. They belong firmly on an old Austin Maestro with wooden bead seat covers.

The golden rule of car ventilation in the summer is windows down to 30mph, then put the aircon on for speeds above that (as the aerodynamic losses of having the window open are greater than the power required by the A/C unit above 30-35mph, and wind noise is really noticeable above that speed)

mine have just been delivered today, 2 weeks wait from Germany. Didn't cost too much so if I don't like them I don't like them, no biggy

Tried to fit the Climair deflectors and the passenger fits no worries where as the drivers side doesn't fit at all and has cracked under the pressure. Appears there isnt enough room as you can hear it crack!!! One appears to have cracked and chipped away, must have fallen off inside the door. Total waste of cash!! Looked at the passengers side and in all honesty... it just looks tacky. I really appreciated it after i took it off. Its a cracking looking car and a hell of a head turner. At least now i can tick it off the list...
