Title: Sprung a Leak!
Post by: FNJ-GTI on 25 March 2014, 08:50
Hi All, This morning on the way to work it was raining fairly heavily and at one point I felt a drop of water on my right hand. I looked up to the window to see a few drops of water had collected along the rubber seal that is on the internal arm of the door, the bit that has the speaker built in. Wondered if anyone else has had a leak in their car? Just to state that its not from the seal that the window rest into, but on the one about an inch into the car. Any advise would be appreciated, is this the sort of thing I should be taking to my dealer?

Hello,

Are you sure it is definitely leaking? Not just the rain getting on the inside of the window when you opened the door to get in?

Hi Mohsin, Im not 100% sure but after I had felt the first few drips I wiped the seal, and then some more droplets appeared after a while. It could be water that has snuk in when I opened the door. Ill do some investigateing. Just seems odd that its never happened before and we have had some awful weather in the recent months.

Put some kitchen roll on the inside of the door / seat and then get the hose pipe out, soon find out if you have a leak! :-) Get yourself straight down the dealer for some new seals if it is the case. Had a few nice days recently, so maybe the rubber has warped slightly (you'd hope not!!)

Let us know how you get on! It used to happen on my Leon where I thought the seal was leaking exactly as you described, but discovered it can't be if I wash my car with a pressure washer and no water leaks in then!

You generally won't find a leak with a hose pipe but believe it or not rain water will find a way through. Strange but true and I've had two cars that were exactly this way. No matter how much hose pipe water was sprayed they never leaked a drop but when it rained it leaked.

I think mcmaddy Is right, I had a look after work last night and when I open my door the top seal/felt/rubber strip running along the top of the door frame was very wet, so I think it must have been rain getting in when I opened the door which proceeded to work its way through into the car. Looked this morning and the strip is still a bit wet so It doesn't dry out that easily. Im really hoping its a one off due to the heavy rain as I got in my car.

Getting a bit of rain from the roof when you open the door isn’t to be unexpected on a modern VW, those rain channels on the roof edges aren’t particularly deep.

Yeah I guess so. I think it just freaked me out a bit as I didn't feel/notice any drops of water on the inside until about half an hour into my journey, making me think it was the rain leaking in on route.

So just an update on my leaky door seal. Opened my drivers door this morning, wasn't raining but must have been a wet night and the seal was soaked, with drips on the inside. The black rubber bit also has some weird marks on it, like something has stained it in a couple of places and its in these places that the water was gathering the most. Ill post a pic if I can work out how to.
Not happy though, expensive car that seems to have a cheap seal that has somehow got damaged? cant think how it would have happened.

Before I head down to the dealer does anyone know how or what could have made these marks? im trying to recall when they appeared, I don't think they were there when I picked up the car (but I cant remember for sure). The water seems to pool on the strips and then gets squished into the car.

Do you know what FNJ, I have exactly that too. I noticed it when I was washing my car but didn't think anything of it and honestly thought it was normal because it hadn't 'squished' and dripped into the car...interesting. I will check it more thoroughly later.
