Title: why is the MK3 cabriolet not loved.
Post by: robiwill on 23 March 2014, 18:56
I have not really posted much on here for a while but I own a mk3 cabriolet in blackberry purple had it for over 6 yrs got it off ebay car had done 90k needing a gearbox with a really tatty hood. replaced this cambelt and waterpump. have looked after it mechanically  etc. now done 255k body is still solid apart from bottom edge rotten wing syndrome. It is the best car i have ever owned and but they are just sooo cheap. I mean I jus bought another one off ebay for £250 quid same colour. I dont understand it compared to a mk1 cabriolet a much more usable car. what do people think will they become a classic or are they just unloved

The Mk1 Cab feels more racey and even though it bends a bit in corners it still handles quite well compared to the Mk3.
Even with a soft top a Mk3 still weighs a lot for the 115hp engine.
I don't mind them personally, having pushed all of my Mk2's and a fair share Mk1's I've only ever pushed a Mk3 home once for an exploding diff
When I was 17 I would have given my left nad for a Mk1 cab or any Golf for that matter but they were always too expensive, Cue a string of Escorts

The mk3's in generally were always unloved, personally one of my favourites of the golf range and have had 2, the second after trying a mk4, Leon Cupra R and TT V6. Feels spritely in comparison to the others ive owned but rust is really getting to a lot of them which isnt a easy/cheap fix for many, also a shame its not got the most soulful engine to listen too which you might want from a cab and I guess the hood is another expensive thing to go wrong on what is now a cheap car.

I think its more to do with they didnt do a proper Mk4 version.
Just did a facelift - what we tend to call the Mk3.5 Cab

As standard they are a bit pants, fit a 1.8t or a VR6 and at least it has got power and a nice engine note as a VR

The only car I think men can pull it off in when it comes to convertibles is the old style Bmw M3
