Does anyone know whether it's possible to get a tow bar for the new GTI yet? I want to fit one to allow my bike rack to go on the back of the car but I'm worried about cutting the rear valance.

 mud flaps, roof racks and now tow bars? Has the world gone mad?

If they made this for the GTI I would've ordered it

Surely that just emphasises even more how much of a do everything sort of car the GTI is?
Tow mounted bike racks are the way to go. I've got a Thule platform 3 bike one. The bikes are away from the car, it's got it's own lights and number plate and it tilts out of the way to allow the tail gate to open.
As for tow bars, I would recommend the Westfalia detachable ones. I've got one on my Passat and you'd never know it was there when the detachable neck was not fitted. I got it from P F Jones in Manchester. I had a look on their site and whilst the list one for the Mk7, it doesn't mention the GTI. It would be worth while giving them a call.
With regards to wiring, I have the full factory 13 pin kit as I tow a caravan. You would only need a 7 pin lighting socket with a bypass relay. If you go for factory kit, it will talk to the car too much. When your lighting board is connected, the car will think it is towing and alter the ABS and stability control settings accordingly.

It is indeed, but I'm a bit of a purest when it comes to these things (alright, apart from having 5 doors) and clamping a load of clutter onto it ruins the clean lines. On occasion we use a bike rack but we have a van which gets used for lugging stuff around, so I can keep my GTI looking like a GTI and not Uncle Jed's truck from the Bervely Hillbillies.

How is fitting a detachable tow bar clamping on a load of clutter? Or is it the thought of it taking up space in the spare wheel well when not in use?

I'm not talking about just a detachable tow bar, which is fairly innocuous by itself. I'm referring (in response to Ginge's post), to adding lots of extras onto the car such as mudflaps, tow bars, wind deflectors, roof racks, as some do. It's called sarcasm.

I have a roof rack bike carriers and a roof box that all fit on my gti which I think makeing the car more of an all rounder yes I could of brought an estate car or a 4x4 but that is not what I wanted plus when I put my foot down my baby smiles as well
