Title: What mods invalidate the VW Warranty?
Post by: GiT1984 on 22 March 2014, 17:24
In essence, can you make any minor mods and retain your warranty?  Or if you do anything it's invalid? I'm a bit out of touch with what VW's line is .....

e.g. If you change the exhaust backbox, FMIC or put a VW Racing induction kit on it - does that invalidate the warranty?

If you have an issue that could be related to your mod, then remedial work at no charge could be refused. You won't get a blanket invalidation of your warranty e.g. dodgy headlight won't be refused because you got an aftermarket exhaust.

Get lowering springs and you've kissed goodbye to any suspension related warranty work. That's why the tuning boxes are so popular vs remaps. Easy to remove if something happens to any of the drivetrain, which may or may not have been caused by the tuning box. I've had a turbo fail on a non-modified Polo at 4k miles in. If something happens to the drivetrain on my GTD, I wouldn't feel dishonest removing the box because chances are it would've gone anyway.

A new set of wheels in 18/19" shouldn't invalidate anything because they can't really adversely effect any other component they're attached to and VW fit those sizes as original euipment. Could they refuse suspension issues with some ultra hard ride 20"ers? Possibly, if VW don't have an equivalent size available for your model.

At the end of the day, warranty work is the dealership's bread and butter beyond selling cars. Their biggest fear is doing work that VW won't pay for. If they know something about your car that could invalidate the warranty but there's no way VW could find out about it, then chances are, they'll do the work and take VW's money.

I have a warranty question if anyone knows, im about to follow the guide by Rikwebb (found in the maintenance section) on installing a dashcam by wiring it into the fuse box. Does anyone know if this invalidates warranty? Ive never done anything like it so am a bit nervous. The guide looks nice an easy to follow though. Thanks.

If you're using a spare fuse slot to do it then I doubt you could invalidate anything, unless your wiring caused the fusbox to go into meltdown. If you were wiring into a fuse placement shared with other units - electrical failure of those connected units could be attributed to the camera placement. As you're not physically drilling any holes or anything to fit the camera, if the worst were to happen on a shared slot you'd remove the camera and all the wiring. Seeing burn-out on a supposedly unused fuse slot might be harder to explain away, although what are the chances? Next-to-nil.

Thanks monkeyhanger. that helps put my fears to rest. my plan is to use a spare fuse slot, I think I read on here somewhere how to do that so I will go for it this weekend.

I used a spare fuse slot for mine, I can't see how they can complain about that at all.  Especially if you have the right fuse in there, i.e. as low as possible - the fuse will blow if something goes wrong

sorry buddy. Full credit to vidman2.

Can I ask was/is it easy to get the glove box off? and would I be able to use the same fuse slot as you mentioned on your excellent guide. and shame on Rik for trying to steal the credit.

Dropping the Glove-box requires some effort to push the retaining clips up, I was very cautious at first and thought they was never going to release but if you get yourself comfy in the seat well and push one retainer up with some force while putting gentle pressure to pull that side down a little and then do the same on the other side it will release and drop down giving access to the fuses.

See no reason why you should not be able to use the same fuse, they should be standard across all models.

Rik was not trying to steal credit it is just that the threads always list the name of the person who posted last, in this case Rik thanking me for the thread.

So other than a tuning box - has anyone modified the performance of their MK7 GTi?

I think GrahamFR has one of the BCS exhausts. Definitely one for the future.

I always think about modding to improve performance but then I'm torn between outlaying hundreds of £'s on the current car or looking to save for the next one. The latter argument always tends to win. I'm only 8 months into ownership and already find it difficult to stop thinking about what I'll get next.

One BCS Powervalve, one set of eibach prolines, rear set of spacers and one Shark in a box. On order is the expensive pipercross induction kit and waiting for Wagner fmic, and then I'm done, honest.

Panel filter will be up free to a good home when it finally comes too!

I thought you were one of the DIY induction kit faithful lol what do you need with a panel filter?

To be honest i'd rather just get a panel filter that try and make a DIY filter. I guess that depends how you find the induction kit

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I'm after any feedback from people in the know.

I'm looking at getting some B16 coilovers for my new R. I understand that this will void the suspension side of the warranty but has anyone taken a lowered car in for other warranty stuff?

I don't want to end up with a worthless warranty by having these fitted.

Cheers

Suspension warranty will be void, if you have wheel bearing issues they will blame the mods and steering. But everything else should be covered including brakes. I put an axle back exhaust on my car 2days after picking it up and had no issues with warranty work.

Admittedly I had lowering springs on mine rather than coilovers but they did a water pump on mine with aftermarket springs, wheels and catback exhaust.
