Title: What do you guys do to stop yourself?
Post by: Nino on 22 March 2014, 08:41
Hey,

The past couple of weeks I have felt like going to the bank and just getting a loan and buying a newer car, I don't know why i feel like im losing passion for my car lately and its pissing me off. lol

Now with me moving out on friday with the misses getting a new car is NOT a good thing to do and further more there is nothing wrong with my car apart from my stuipd 17705 error back but i think i know what that is now and in the process of sorting it.

I got a funny feeling its cuz all my mates have newer cars than me which are alot faster.

I love my little golf and want to get it finished, what do you guys do to snap yourselfs out of feeling like this?

I also do this quite a lot, but then I spend more money on the mk4 and decided that actually it's not that bad

For example I almost sold it last year but bought air instead, I was on the verge of writing a for sale advert last night after the wheels going but the Mrs persuaded me to buy a new set of wheels instead which will keep me happy for a while

I modified mine

It's over 300 bhp per ton so it might keep up with newer cars, maybe

I do what dom does so either spend money on it or buy something else to take your mind off of it ! The end is actually near for mine though me and the mrs will be planning to have a kid soon and moving in together even sooner. The golf is not practical for a baby its far to harsh and I wont actually drive it if we lived together as I have a work van anyway so it would just be her car :(

All the above I have done in the past, my issue now is, I am at the stage were all the mods I need to do are expensive mods and don't have the money lol

I get what you mean buddy but there is only so much of "when you gunna get a decent car" banter you can take

banter is banter, it'll be something else if you had a different car!  If you are happy with it then it'll not bother you.

The amount of time and effort I have spent on my car is alot. I don't like having my time wasted so I guess thats what keeps me from selling it!

I always talk my self round...Yes I'll NEED that new IC and set of wheels, but I don't NEED a new car  :lipsrsealed:

My cuz drives a 58 plate civic type r, and my friends drive a focus ST (mk2) and Honda s2000.
MY car is still running standard map atm, I have just updated my build thread (link under my sig) and Monkey my car is no-where near the quality of yours lol

the way I stop myself selling it is I know that in the future its going to lead to good things... i.e I have a few things to do on it, about £700 worth of mods. then its time to get the weekend toy, 911/caterham and keep the golf as a daily driver. if I went out and bought a brand new car, id be less inclined to buy the weekend toy, and I proberbly wouldn't be able to for a long time cause id of just bought a brand new car.

also I know many people who have got loans out to buy cars, and all of them regret it massively now. none of them are even driving the car they got the loans out for and are all still paying them off...

In the bigger picture, most people need a car that gest you from A to B. If it does that, and you can have a bit of fun on the way then it is a bonus.

You must live within your means. Don't go taking out a loan for a car, I know people who have made 4 figure mistakes on things like that.

I see all these new car and I am a little bit jealous. But then my car is unique (he says driving the only moddyfied mk4 in the UK ) and looks different. The only thing I'm jealous of with new cars is the DRLs!  :undecided:

I bet half the peeople in new cars cannot properly afford them, pay through the nose on deals where they don't actually own the car.

Be happy.

I only asked out of curiosity as I'm a member on the BMW cutters forum and someone asked a similar question a while ago and when he referred to newer cars he meant some big power evos and modified r35 gtr

I say...... Rent a garage 10 miles away and stick her in it, then only use it as a weekend car! Then every sat and Sunday you be smiling!

My only real advice is don't borrow for a car it's just not worth it :)

Mine broke, wasnt put back together properly so that was decision made for me

Sometimes i miss it, especially the seats and I do have thoughts of tracking it down but only so I can fix it properly and give it a decent send off

Weirdly I'm going through the same patch with the Audi but I've found a few things I want to do so that's given me a bit more enthusiasm. That and its only done 75k so plenty of life left in it yet

Save your money, I'm considering engine swap out for a BAM and beach buggy k400, the only reason I could afford this now is that I would be living literally 10mins walk from work and I'll save 200 a month in fuel alone nevermind the other costs associated with it! As scarr says, means not musts. I would love to plough the 3000 into my golf to get it running the way I want but I'd need to ensure the roof is over my head first. The way I'm looking at it is this:

The car will die on the road or die of old age

You will always be able to save up for a car mate. I saved for the last 5 years for the next Rseries to come out with vw but I've now spent the 25k on a house buy instead.

Worth it? Most definetly! If you want something then figure out the means of getting it.

I now want to holiday in Mauritius, I can't get there on the wage I'm on, so now I'm studying for AutoCAD and the CII hoping one of those two fields will get me there as well as making plans to rent out one of the rooms I will have on the bottom floor of my house as its literally a self contained flat.

You're doing we'll buddy, keep at it and just think of this, you have a frikkin golf, the car you gaped at the age of 17 wishing you could afford one, and not only that you have built a history with it and it looks awesome

All you have to do now is prioritise buddy

Best thing you can do is save up your money. If the car can get you from a to b then thats all you need for now ,don't waste money on a car that you will never get your money back. I want more power and will buy the right second hand car one day, iv saved up 10,000 pound but still find my golf good at going to the bank or shop for beers for now.

Much agree, don't finance or take a loan out just for the car, I've know individuals who are still paying their monthly repayments years after they've had the car written off. Must feel awful.

You will always want more. Even with a new(er) car you will find thing that piss you off. Guaranteed.

f**k taking getting in debt for a car.

I know loads of people who will and then not be able to even afford to run it and pay for fuel.

I would spend £1.5k or so on the golf, k04 it and then take the piss out of ur mates..

Flip it.

(The scenareo not the car)

From a purely fiscal sense, doing any sort of extensive modification is the same waste of money as buying a newer car. As you will lose the vast majority of it in resale value.

People shy away from the word debt, as its dripping with negative connotations but there is nothing wrong with using disciplined use of credit. A decent second hand car, with the right loan can be affordable and be the most sensible thing to do long term.

The key is to just stress test your finances over the loan period and make sure you are fine even in a doomsday scenario.

The only single peice of advice I would give is dont spend anything significant on a depreciating asset until you have bought a house (or plan to live with your parents until the end of time).

Edit, ive just re read to op. Only buy a new car if you want one for you. Chasing others will only lead to bad things. And with used cars is usually better the devil you know.

Who cares what anyone else drives mate if you love your car keep it if not bud go for something else!! I have 2 motors 1 I never get to use as the wife has it and my golf which I have spent thousands on!!!! but in 3 yrs has never gone wrong so I don't care about spending money on it!! And finance is totally fine if it's 0% or extremely low! When I bought the A6 brand new I got  2.5% over 4yrs with 12k down and it's more than affordable for myself! The key is only buy what you can afford and don't over stretch  yourself.. But agree with others whatever you buy you will sink money in to pal!!

I constantly get told to scrap my car by mates and then they get in it and always say wow! yes it may look a little grim on the outside few dents and rust and what not but it'll be sorted one day!! I love the smile it puts on my face and if the engine was to blow tomorrow I still think I would get another engine for it lol

Not going to lie ive had some issues myself recently (will update the build) and i even thought of breaking my car this week!
Thanks to the likes of Baxxy and ARD i haven't!
At the end of the day, if your drowing in debt for a car that you cant even fuel, whats the point!
