I am looking at buying another Mk3 but this has a running issue, when cold it runs fine and then will stall and fail to restart when up to temp and it fails to spark when it's stalled. It's had new crank sensor, temp sensor, maf, relay 30, cleaned throttle body, vac pipes checked and it shows no fault codes.
I am thinking hall sender myself but the mechanic is thinking a faulty ecu, the only other thing the car does is when checking it on vag-com/snap on reader it shows the temp as 110 degrees (90 on the dash) and doesn't seem to over heat (this is with new temp sensor)
b.t.w it dosen't smell fuely etc
Any ideas anyone??

Id be tempted to try another temp sensor and inspect the plug and wiring before anything else. Where was the replacement from?

We tried 2 sensors (new intermotor one and one from my gti, same issue shows but all is ok on mine). I have asked him to check all the wiring as I know certain issues can be caused by bad wires. It still doesn't explain why it stalls and dies till cool though?

Coil?

When i baught my golf the previous owner had said he fitted a brand new crank sensor and it did look new 2 weeks later i had the same problems your having after doing the job my self with another new sensor i have had no problems.
I was adamant it was a coil and nearly believed after being in a lay by for an hour AA change the coil and it started but once warm stalled again so got towed home new crank sensor all sorted

I will look at coil although it looks recent. I know the crank sensor is new as I supplied it. It's the temp issue with the stalling that's beating me although it may not be linked

Crank shaft sensor or hall sender i would say.
New crankshaft sensors can fail

Coil is new so that's out. I do wonder about crank sensor but I would expect the car to differ from original fault and show on vag com or the snap on reader

try the airflow meter or throttle body had loads of issues like this when I was selling MK3 golfs. never had an ecu problem on a Mk3 but going back a good few yrs now
