I am in the US, MK7s aren't out here yet for a couple months so I figured I would ask you guys. I can't even see one at a dealer at this point. I am in the market for a GTI (GTDs won't come here I don't think)
Is the 3 door the same size as the 5 door or is it any shorter? I want something small, the GTI seems to be quite a bit bigger than say a mini cooper which I am a little worried about.
Does the MK7 have drilled mounting points for a roof (a la BMW) or do you have to have feet sitting on the paint? What rack systems have you set up so far? I need a year round roof rack for bicycles.
How long is your wait from time order is placed to getting the vehicle?
BTW, I notice your prices are much higher than here in the US, makes me feel like I am getting a bargain.

3 and 5 door are the same overall size.
You can see a comparison graphic to the MK6 to give you an idea of size here http://www.vwvortex.com/features/technical-features/golf-7-technicalpreview/
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=258984.0 will show you when people ordered and then collected
Loads of pictures on google about the MK7 roof rack that suggest the feet sit on the paintwork.
Your prices may be lower but it will be a lower spec car you get.

Hi azmtbiker,
Welcome.
I moved from an R56 MINI Cooper to the Mk7 GTI as I needed the extra space. The car is quite a lot larger than the MINI, so make sure you get a test drive!

There are no holes for roof racks AFAIK. You just have the feet that clamp onto the car.
As for wait time - I doubt anybody knows how long it will be in the USA. Are they made in Mexico or shipped from Europe?

It will be made in Mexico which really makes the one coming from Germany priceless

Our prices aren’t competitive in the US, so they’ve got to sell them for significantly less to make the sale and compete with the US brands. Metallic paint is a free option for the US, and that’s just for starters. US Golfs are made in Mexico, except the GTI, which is a full fat German built one. It’s amazing how little they can sell a GTI for and presumably still make money on it.
The MK7 GTI isn’t available yet, but right now, the MK6 has a raft of equipment that wasn’t standard spec in most of Europe, and certainly not at $25095 (£15600). Anniversary edition style alloys, heated front seats, free metallic paint. They get a little less for paying 60% of what we do (normal A/C instead of dual zone is the main omission I can see, no mention of an antidazzle rear view mirror). They get a 5 year power train warrany in addition to our 3 year warranty and 2 years free servicing as standard – I feel more than a little ripped off by VW. For $4k more you can add leather, xenons, sat nav in the Wolfsburg edition.

If you put it like that then yeah it does appear we aren't getting our monies worth.

The most reliable VW i've ever had was not made in Germany, it was made in Portugal. One of my Sciroccos required no warranty work at all. I've had 3 issues with my new GTD to date.

The US prices exclude local sales taxes, delivery, dealer charges etc so you can't compare them to the UK on the road prices. A uk spec mk 7 gti ex vat is £21,100, it'll be interesting to see what the US mk 7 price is. The Euro / $ exchange rate is the applicable one if the cars are built in Germany but even then you don't know if vw have hedged the currency or have another way of accounting for the US $ sales. The US market is much more competitive than the uk and I imagine the dealer margin is less. I dislike the apparent disparity as much as the next person but I suspect it's not as great as it first appears and the market is different too, so it's very hard to make a true comparison. Oh, and I don't work for vw!

But watching that video the Mexican built GTI's have got spoony alloys and a normal handbrake. What else will they be missing from our British spec

Genuine VW roof rack and cycle carrier - it sits on the roof with the feet on the paint but they are rubbery where they touch. Underneath on the front doors, there are two locating pins in the door frame and for the rear (on the 3 door) you slide the bracket into a position between the window rubber and the body (marked by two arrows on the glass itself)
