Anybody researching to do a turbo swap from the GTI Mk7 IHI IS20 to the Audi S3/Golf R MK7 IHI IS38?
-
you cant until you crack the ecu, even then a turbo swap is a bit of a way off, how long did it take for revo and apr to offer ko4's to the mk6's?
-
The R is only a few grand more than the GTi, why not just buy one? Surely it would work out cheaper, plus you then get AWD...
-
By looking at both turbos they seem to be pretty identical, wouldn't it be a straight bolt on? What would happen then without a software tune?
Also, vw does not sell the golf r or even the pp version down here. The closest thing is the Audi S3 which costs 35k more than the golf GTI...
Currently what we have here is only the Speed Buster piggyback and sports filter.

Jimmy: R will be slower than a gti with R turbo, maybe not 0-60 but look how the cupra compares to the R's laptimes round Ze ring.
Kreator: wouldn't like to find out, ecu would probably request the wrong fuel and air mixes and it wouldn't be pretty lol
-
In answer to the next question, yes it would've made more sense to buy a cupra 280, but it wasn't out when I needed a new car lol
-
What about an S1? I was just reading about it on the topgear website.
-
Will be expensive as hell here too.
Well I guess I'm a hostage of APR/Unitronic :P

Apparently the Cupra taken round the track wasn't the same as the one on sale, had different tyres and I think I read brakes and a few other bits to boost it round the track. Can't remember the details, but it was done because the target audience are the type of people that quite lap times.
Don't the R and GTi share the EA888, but the R is modified? different pistons, cylinder head, injectors and the turbo? If that is the case why would a GTI with the R turbo be faster? I appreciate the AWD system affects it, but the traction benefits are a bonus.
Genuine question, I know a bit about tuning, but not enough!
-
Also, I know a lot of countries are getting a detuned version of the R because it needs a minimum on 98RON. I know USA and SA get a slower version because of the quality of their petrol.

Audi S1 looks amazing and I will genuinely consider it for my next car IF it turns out to have the S3 turbo and not the GTI one simply because it will stage 1 map from 230 to 350bhp lol weapon and a half. But if it's the GTI turbo which I thought it was at first due to the bhp then it's not worth it, it's heavier than the GTI and not much faster 0-60, but the co2 is a lot worse so that indicates a bigger turbo I hope.
The cupra around the ring had brembo brakes and an ac delete, supposedly all to be offered soon although what mong would delete the ac from their new car is beyond me. Yes this obviously made it faster but given the deficit between the R and Cupra I'd suspect that even without these changes at a similar bhp and extra lightness without Awd, that lsd makes the cupra faster around a track on a perfect day.
Yes there will probably be other changes to the R you may have to make like injectors however for this comparison all I'm suggesting is that you Bolt on a R IHI to the GTI and then map correctly you basically create a cupra with better looks  which on those 3 sunny days in England will be faster than a R. In terms of maximum tuning potential you'd be daft not to want Awd if you get close to 400bhp however.

Ok, that makes sense.
I know of one R that has had a piggyback box out on it and is now 370bhp. I'm waiting to hear what that does to the performance.

That turbo has gotta be good for 400+ its going to be incredible, no doubt making an ultimate machine from the R and a complete maniac from the cupra for relatively small expenditure. hmm next car next car......
