I put a deposit down on a mk.6 Golf 1.4 TSI GT (160) today and was really exited until I was browsing on the internet and read a lot about the dreaded misfire and piston issues.
I posted in the general thread before I noticed this section so sorry for double posting but I need to make a decision before Monday morning.

I've heard of timing chain issues on these 1.4 TSI's...VW doesn't appear to have great form when it comes to timing chains (See the sticky on the MK6 forum for the 2.0 TSI, Turbo only) perhaps they should stick to rubber belts :lipsrsealed:.
The other issue I read about was bore wash which may or not have been resolved with later models. Having a Turbo and Supercharger adds complexity so it sounds like a good idea on paper but the reality appears to be different.
Have you considered a GTD with the CR170 engine? Seems to be one of the more reliable engines out of the MK6 range. I would give the 1.4 TSI a miss, doesn't do anything better than the GTI or GTD.

Age and mileage wise, a GTD is going to cost a whole heap of more money to buy. Personally I think the best all rounder in the range is the GT TDI. You get reasonable performance, near Bluemotion fuel consumption and lots and lots to choose from, meaning you can be sure of finding a good one. Also, there will always be a strong market for diesel engined Golfs, so it will still retain a strong residual.

I've read on other VW forums about the TSi 1.4 engines causing problems and occasionally having to be replaced.
Hence why my GT 160 is being traded in for a new GTi in September.
The car has had 6 RAC/VW Assist callouts, 2 sets of spark plugs, 3 software updates and fuel injectoers changed twice.........And the car has under 9500 miles !

personal - traumatic - experience : car bought new, pistons gave in, engine gave in, car sold within the year. Never going back for that one :cry:

Guess that is all done to the luck of the draw with the car that you actually get. I have an '09 GT 160 and in the four years I have had it I have not had a single problem with the engine itself (fingers crossed).
Given the choice between a GTI/GTD and a GT 160, now I would choose the GTI/GTD without hesitation but then again you could also end up with a right lemon by choosing the wrong one there too!
