In my half asleep state this morning I hit the wing mirror on the garage door and it smashed into a million pieces. I knew I was half asleep because instead of going nuts I just went "oh".
The mechanism isn't damaged, it still folds and the mirror can be adjusted, mirror isn't smashed so it's just the plastic surround thank God. I'm off to the dealer to get the parts but looking at it, it looks like the door card has to come off to fix it.
Anyone here done this before, surely I can't be the only one dozy enough to crash it!

So annoying  I feel for you. If it's going to cost loads go through your insurance if you have a low excess and protected no claims.
I feel your pain, my wife hit a pheasant on Saturday, total accident and was only going 60 on a 60 road. Totally f7cked my front bumper and it's all cracked - £500 notes for a new one  What can you do eh.
-
Er.. stop your wife driving the Gti??

Don't go anywhere near your insurance company for a wing mirror. Once you tell them no matter what your premium will go up even with protected no claims. In insurance eyes your now more likely to have an accident after claiming!!

What Mcmaddy says! If its only the external housing its very unlikely the door card would have to come off as you generally only need to do that if you are replacing the core mirror structure...
-
I was quite impressed by the parts guy at the dealership, he showed me the exploded diagram and initially it was only the shell which came to about £100 painted. Then I noticed when I got back to the car I had cracked the base.. which is part of the core unit, gutted, so another £££ gone.
He did show me how to get the door card off though, and how it all bolted together so that saved me £130 fitting.
It's just one of those things... expensive, but it's my own fault. :embarrassed:
-
I suppose the exploded diagram looked quite similar to your wing mirror as it is?
If it wasn't for the paint job, that cap would be probably around £20. If the base is cracked but structurally sound and you'd have to go examining the wing mirror's underside to see it, i'd be tempted to leave it alone and say nowt at trade-in time.

Haha, no it looked like the contents of my driveway.
The car is only 4 months old, and as it was in my line of sight, it would have just wound me up. Leaving it was considered for 0.5 seconds

Hopefully the workshop manual will be along soon

Hi, this is my first post, and a cry for help....
I'm sorry to hear about your prang mistertee, but perhaps it could be of great use to me, every cloud an all that :)
I'm from the Caddy forum www.caddy2k.com, and while researching Mk7 mirror(puddle) lights, I stumbled across this thread.
I have retrofitted the Mk7 led lights into the mirrors on my Caddy, they work perfectly

However....
I offered to make up custom looms for a few other members to carry out the same modifications, I would like to make it as OE as possible, I have all the connectors except one. I am having great difficulty finding the plug/connector that plugs into the led light unit (mine uses pins inserted and the socket filled with sealant), I'd like to make it "plug and play".
There is no information about this on ETKA, and my dealer isn't too keen on me dismantling the mirror of the GTI on the forecourt lol.
So basically I'm asking for someone like the op, who has their mirror apart, to take a few pictures of the plug, and a part No. of the plug itself.
Any help would be appreciated.
my email is andrewmcknight@eircom.net
Sorry to hijack your thread,
Hopefully you see this before you get your mirror built up again

This any good for you? Couldn't see a part number
-
Thanks for that mistertee, that's certainly it.
I'm surprised there wasn't some sort of code or part No. on it.
I doubt i'd be able to order some without it :(

I've had a really good look, and I can't see a part number. The only one I can see is on the light unit itself which you've got, sorry.
